hey everybody,

i'm in the process of trying to work out how to take my music with me on my 12 mth rtw... i have heard about i-pods etc., but know basically nothing about them... just wondering what people suggest with taking music on a RTW... don't really want to be bogged down with a whole lot of CDs etc... is there a particular gadget out there that is particularly worth purchasing????? would appreciate any assistance.

Yeah, you really can't beat an I-pod (or the like) as far as convenience, and its light weight. Also, on some of these gizmos you can actually load pictures from your digi cam on to them so you dont have to worry about burning CDs and stuff. As far as the best one, it all depends on how much you want to spend, and whether you just want to be able to listen to MP3s or upload pix to it also...

I would suggest trying to pick up music as you go along. It will make the experience that much more cultural and really memorable.

If you are looking for an ipod you can find the older ones at a good price on ebay.

It also depends on how much music you want to take, there's lots of different makes & storage sizes of MP3 players out there - I'm a music fiend so I'm gonna be getting something that's about 40Gb memory, enough to hold several hundred albums' worth - personally I'd suggest looking at other brands instead of IPod such as Creative, Sony, etc. to see what sort of deal you can get for yourself. you can get ones that also act as a recording device, allowing you to perhaps sample and store some of the local music while you're travelling. That's my plan!

I've got a 40gb i-pod with somewhere in the region of 10,000 songs on it....music is my comfort blanket some might say. I'd recomend not getting an ipod though!!! They look the business but unfortunately they are prone to screwing up.

I've had mine just over a year and the battery life is now only about 3hours, and if i don't use it for a couple of days the battery somehow just dies.

As mentioned above I'd go for one of the other makes, I know a few people who have Creative & Sony ones and they swear by them, they're also a bit cheaper too.

Also, and I don't know if this is the case for other players, you won't be able to update it while you are away as it configures itself to your iTunes, if you plug it in to another computer you will lose everything.

I knew I was not jumping on the IPOD bandwagon for a reason. I had a feeling! Thanks for validating that.

You know, I would actually say you should get an Ipod, I love mine. They have the new 60gb video one for 400 right now. You can load some movies to watch on the plane, you can put all your digital camera pics on it and have thousands of songs. it also has a schedule, and some games on it too. It definetly is worth it, it is small and is extremely useful. i love mine.

My problem with iPod's is not how useful they are, they are far better than any other mp3 player I have seen, it's just their reliability that is the problem.

Have you had yours over a year? If so and you've had no problems then I'd say you're one of the lucky ones...if not then I'd keep your fingers crossed

If you dont have the money or the desire for an ipod or mp3 player, open an email account with large space and send your music to it before you leave. I suggest

it has a 2048mb capacity. Sending to the email address may be time consuming depending on your connection speed. however i have found it useful having an email account full of my favourite tunes as i can burn cd's at the internet cafes that have burners or just listen to music when i feel like downloading a song

i bought my ipod last jan, so about 11months. I brought it traveling all over the US, and to france when i went there. i never had a problem with and found it to be extremely useful. i also have a lot of friends that have ipods for a year or more and they have never had problems with it either, i think that it sucks you got a bad one, but they are a super high percentage of people that get bad ones, its no where near 15%, maybe 5%. If there were more people with bad ipods then there would be more complaints, news coverage on it, etc. So good luck in buying your mp3 player, i would research before you go, but for the money you cant beat an ipod. the 60gb ipod right now is 400, and it can hold your pics, movies, songs etc.

I just got the ipod 30gb video and I love it! watching movies on it is great. I uploaded photos on it in a second. The picture quality for movies and photos is killer! The ease use for viewing and finding the songs/albums is awesome too. I highly recommend it.

I have not had any probs with my 20gb Ipod that I got in New York in March 2003, It was far cheaper their than back home in blighty.

I have not had any major probs with battery life, and I used to use it a hell of a lot when I was a student. The only thing thtat annoys me is that according to the battery indicator the battery is never full

just a tip if you are getting the new ipod or the ipod nano, make sure you dont get the black one! It scratches far to easily. If you do get the black one be sure to get a case before using it. Also, the screen scratches easily so get a protective cover for that too.

other then that I still love my new Ipod Video/Photo =P

I am also an iPod girl - i know some people have had batteriy problems, but I never have. In fact, I love my 40G one so much I bought a pink mini one as well, so I have a cheaper one to chuck in my pocket and not worry about.

Having said that, those new Sony ones look really good and apparently have about 30 hours battery life, which is more than twice what I get from my iPod.

the sony ones look really good, but they are actually pretty rubbish from what i hear...transferring music on to them is meant to be a real pain in the arse and they only store 20gb i think.

just an update on my iPod that i was previously moaning about....somehow it has started working again and i am having absolutely no problems with it at all anymore...how strange...i'm now firmly back in the land of the iPod lover

A zen touch I think.

It's bigger then an ipod, however I've had no complaints so far. It was much cheaper and battery life is longer.

Plus it can be used as an external hard drive

No matter what you do, DO NOT bring music from the following bands with you. You'll hear way too much of them as it is:

I have an iPod but I'm still not sure on this issue. I don't think you can add any music along your trip to your current selection, can you?

Basically, your iPod copies your iTunes collection, so if you upload a song during your trip, it will erase everything else. Otherwise you can just go everywhere and copy everyone's music. Sure when you're not on the move, you can just transfer others' files to your computer, but on the road, I don't know how you would get around this.

I'd love to know though!

You can add music to your iPod from any computer. So yeah, you can grab music while on the road and upload it from the internet cafe.

There's only two sticky bits:
1) older iPods like to be either Mac or PC, but not both. Newer iPods don't care and play nice with everyone.

2) you can't pull the songs off your iPod and into your library when you get home. (you can get around this with various software tools.)
