Just to add: without my ipod, it is quite possible I would have gone crazy on various points of my trip.

I have a laptop with 80 gigs. I load CDs onto it at every stop and my collection is growing nicely!
Only thing missing are a pair of small yet bitchin' speakers since the ones ont he computer aren't all that. And an ipod, but I figure you can't have everything...at least not at once!

I can't help you with what to take, but strongly recommend picking thigs up on the road. We have a blast hearing again one of the "habibi" songs from the movies that are blasting on Egyptian buses, another that we heard everywhere in Ecuador or the soundtrack to the Bollywood movie that we saw in India.
