I am taking an RTW and I am interested in how long everyone would stay in each of these areas.

Here is the flight track:

Portland - Venice - Overland to Rome - Cairo - Overland to Luxor - Entebbe/Kampala - Overland to Kilimanjaro - Bangkok - Overland to Hong Kong - Overland to Shanghai - Tokyo - Portland

Well what do you think? How long would you stay?

This may sound like a vague answer, but I would think ideally you could leave your itinerary open so that when you are especially inspired or interested in a certain place you won't have to hurry through and when you don't like a place, you can get out fast.

How would I go about keeping it open ended though? One-way tickets?

Start with a one-way ticket to AMS, LHR, or FRA. Any of those. Go from there. Do not plan your trip beyond where you are going to sleep the first night. Let serendipity be your guide.

I don't mean to sound cowardly, but that seems a bit daunting. I mean don't get me wrong I would ABSOLUTLY LOVE to travel that way, and I probably will end up doing it that way, but I just don't feel like I know enough too.

Can I just buy a ticket to my next destination from the airport or online? What about visas? Anything else I need to know?

Start with Let's Go: Europe and you'll be fine. If you are feeling rich, then also pick up a copy of Rough Guide to First-Time Around the World.

online or travel agents if you must. if you can find a place to stay your first night or few days, you will be set. they'll likely have a computer there and you can plan your next steps. If you've got a good amount of time to spend abroad, why not take it at that leisurely pace? Over thinking is the only thing preventing you from doing it that way.

Which is because you'll meet lots of people wherever you're staying and enjoy the universal friendmaker that is alcohol. Those people likely will be able to help you if you feel stuck.

Awesome! Yeah, I have 'A Rough Guide Special: First-Time Around the World'.

It helps alot, but I think that your right Justin7199, I am overthinking. I think alot of that stems from me being anxious to leave and worrying about what I need to prepare and if I'll have enough money. =-/

I agree with everyone else...DO NOT overplan...Wink

If you must...You could get all your tickets...with open dates or with dates that u can change...this is more costly...

But when u are balancing your feelings of security and truly travelling and "living ur dream" it may be worth it. Wink

It sounds fairly opene ended anyway..and it all depends on how much time you have to do this trip in...I mean you could spend anywhere from 6 weeks to 6 months or more getting from BKK to HKG alone!

I'd sday something like 9 or 10 days to do Venice and Rome. Gives you maybe 3 days in Venice and 5 in Rome with a days travel and a day to get over jet lag etc. Apart from that, its kinda hard to say.

I always travel open ended too - as long as i can afford the time off. You will be really happy you made that decision because then you can do whatever you want and keep in mind if you feel totally overwhelmed you can always spend a day or 2 at an internet cafe getting all your other tickets if you want Smile I just read an article about a guy who traveled rtw and bought tickets at the last minute the whole way - cost him i think about $1600, which is pretty good if you ask me!

I am very excited for Venice and I will hopefully be able to stay in Italy for about 2 months. In totally the trip will take anywhere from 10-23 months. I am planning on living in Japan for up to a year, which is why the big range in time haha

I am booking the trip to Thailand with a company called Real Gap (http://www.realgap.co.uk), they have a month of detailed itinerary built up for Thailand along with a month for volunteering the Karen Hill Tribes in the North. The itinerary even includes a 2 night stay in a Buddhist Monestary! The only other planned part of the venture will be a 3 month volunteer project in Uganda.
