I'm taking at least 6, maybe as much as 9 months off to travel this fall, 2008 and am looking for ideas on what to do with a great car. Letting it sit for 6 months or more will surely ruin it but to sell it, only to have to buy another when I get back is a pain, especially in that it's a great car, got a great deal on it. Any suggestions?

I've thought of leasing it to a friend or something but that just seems like it could get ugly if the car was wrecked or damage was done...?

I'm garaging mine at my parents and they're going to take it out around the block every once in a while. I'm going to keep insurance on it but turn in my registration, so the total insurance cost is pretty low (I think around 300 dollars for 18 months.)

I did the same asked a cousin of mine to drive it around once a week. Had minimum insurance on it...just collision insurance I think...that kept the insurance current and also it made it seem I did not discontinue my insurance.

Before you leave your car make sure you do a full oil change etc and again once you come back before you drive change all the fluids.

If you leave it with somebody and they don't drive it but its parked with a cover then make sure you put some cardboard under the tires so that the asphalt does not damage them with the heat and also take off the battery.

I believe that there are storage units for cars too...just heard don't really know.

Remember to either keep the insurance current or to re-instate it the second you get back. One of my friends, let the insurance on his truck lapse while he was travelling. When he got back, he didn't pay for it right away but he started driving. So, it figures that he gets in a crash and was in big trouble for driving without insurance. Just another thing to put on your to-do list.
