Holds PhD in Packing |
I'm thinking of doing a RTW trip this year and would like to get some input from all you RTW veterans. I'm thinking of heading out from San Francisco (home), and starting in Beijing with a transiberian rail journey to st. petersburg (with Intrepid). From there I'll wander around Europe for up to a month, ultimately making my way down to Morocco. From Morocco I'd like to hit up a city or two in South America (don't know which one), and then to Sydney, Australia, before coming back to San Francisco. Of this trip the only part I'm really sure about is the transiberian, because I've always wanted to do that. Its the Australia and S. America parts I'm unsure of. Is it realistic to just spend 3-4 days in just one city on each continent?

My Personal thoughts in this...
I think you;d be wasting your time and money by hitting up just one City in one country in each continent. Personally I dont see you getting a great deal out of that aisde from jet lag. What sort of time frame are you looking at for the whole trip? I'd also reconsider the route (although that might be neagted...you'll need to (and want to) head in teh same direction until you get home.... You'd be better off starting in Europe, making your way to Moscow, getting trans-sib to Beijing heading through Asia to Australia and then to South America before home... But, like i said if all you're going to do in Oz is spend 4 days in Sydney beofre geoingto South America then I'd seriously forget it... Like I said, depends on time frame and money really.. |

One major problem in your trip is that in your current plan, you're crossing the Pacific 3 times... you'd be much better off with the itinerary suggested by LondonCard2.
That being said, I agree that a 4 day stay per continent is much too short! How much time total do you have? It sounds like several months at least, so why not focus your time, money, and energy on a London (or wherever) to Beijing overland trip? |

I agree with the others - after this trip, the only thing you'll be able to do, is to say that you've done it. Not sure how many 'check list' travelers you'll find around here.
Adding your destinations up, I'd say you have around 2 months, right? Spend that time in one region. You'll get more out of it. China + Russia or Europe or South America or Australia. And just because I've said it so many times, I'll do it again: there is no such thing as a 'TransSib ticket'. It's most certainly a rip off if somebody advertises it as that. ---------------------------------------------- My personal travel website. www.aresthetics.ch/trav ------------------------------ "Nationalism is an infantile disease, the measles of mankind." Wonderful! I'm getting some great input here. For instance, I totally didn't even see the "crossing the Pacific 3 times" thing.
I'll have to admit, the whole Oz and SA portions of the trip were purely "checklist" items! __________________________________________ greetings earthling! can someone show me how to get to San Leandro? |
