Hey i've been asking alot of questions here lately and thanks for all the help i don;t know how people planned these trips without the internet back in the day!
Anyway i've changed my plan a million times, sometimes because i wanted to sometimes because i had to.. So here it is. I havn't booked yet but i'm leaving in March. Need to book it in the next few days.. Depart dublin March... New York, California, Texas 1 month mexico - panama (overland) 2 months (ish) Bolivia (volunteering)2 months Peru, Columbia, Ecuador, Brazil, Argentina, Chile 4 months New Zealand 2 months Fiji 1 week, 2 weeks, 3? help me out on this one! Oz - 6 months - 1 year.. i'm gonna work in Oz for 6 - 12 months before traveling asia until the money runs out...and on home (maybe thru europe see how the money goes!) |

I think it looks pretty good. Might need to cut a few countries out in South America, and Mexico-Panama might be a tiny bit rushed, but it looks like fun. Should you maybe do Fiji before NZ? Also, are you taking flights in the US? NY, California, and Texas are all pretty different parts of the country, if you try and see them all overland it might be a little much.

I'd say all in all it was pretty sound. I ditto the flying in the uS if you want to cover all that ground in a month. I'm glad you've given NZ the time it deserves by the way!
The only potential problem I see is taht if you're wanting to book a rtw ticket that virtually all of them requie you to be back to your starting point 365 days after your departure. Maybe you're just buying your first flight and if so then you're probably on the right path. You're probably on the case with your vaccinations but if you aren't then I'd get onto that as soon as possible. Looks like a great trip all told, should be an incredible and memorable one! If you need anything else you know where we are... |

hey thanks for the replies.. i'm actually goin on a one year RTW but i'm just gonna skip the flight home (girl in travel agent said that was fine)
I would liek to do Fiji first but i can;t as i'll be flying from Santiago and they only do NZ or OZ. About the US i'm only going to be in NY for paddys weekend then onto Vegas.. i figured i'd spend 4 weeks making my way from vegas to texas to get a flight to mexico ( which i have to do to prove i'm leaving the US) Would i be better off just hanging around California and getting aflight from there..? kinda wanted to see some landscape etc.. ]I'm not actually on the case with Vaccs yet but i'm bookin 2moro, jabs the next day..! |

I think if you did something like:
NYC -> fly to Vegas -> drive around to Cali and Texas -> go on to Mexico you'll probably be ok timewise. There's a lot you can see in the area, and I think 4 weeks would give you enough flexibility to see most of it - California, the national parks in Arizona and Utah (Grand Canyon!), Albuquerque/Santa Fe, Carlsbad, and Texas of course. |

Nice one - I am planning a very similar route (including west coast US, overland CA, overland SA, NZ and Oz) - and I have made rough calculations and am starting to feel that CA and SA might be rushed at 2 months each... anyway... if you are looking at Oneworld RTW tickets you can fly Santiago->Easter Island->Papeete (Tahiti)->Auckland - I am planning to do this. I had Fiji on my mind first but I think Easter Island and Tahiti will do fine!

Nice trip!
How much is it costing you? i got qouted €2800 today (form the same place that qouted me €2200 last week) It's just an Irish youth travel agent so i'm looking into alternative options.. was looking at airtrek.com but i cant figure it out as the Trip Planner won't let you say your doing overland... So i had to say i was flying from california - mexico - panama - santiago - Auckland when actually i just want to fly california - mexico and santiago - auckland Any help on this guys.. Cant ring them as i'm in Ireland with no land-line..?/? |

Oneworld.com has the useful trip planner and the details on the rules for their Explorer and Global Explorer tickets (if that is what Airtreks is presumably selling you).
The rules are quite complex IMHO. I am dealing with my local Oneworld airline (Finnair). You could go to a local BA office and go through the details (I dread to think how much a premium rate phone call would cost to spend an hour plus talking through one of these tickets). There are others on these fora (Gardyloo!) who can better advise on the detail. I am currently very confused about the status of various codeshare flights and waiting to hear back from Finnair... |

Are you planning on finishing up your trip in 12 months?
I plan to stay in Oz having been traveling a year but Oneworld.com doesn't allow that - i don't think.. the rules online are very vague (minimum 10 days - maximum 1 year) |

Anna, I'd suggest either calling in or calling up either Trailfinders or STA. They are both incredibly helpful (I find Trailfinders more helpful) in looking at routes and plans and being able to tell you what you can and cant do. They'll be able to advise you just what is permitted.
Its worth finding out at the very least so you know exactly where you stand. |

I'm actually 90min bus trip away from my nearest Trailfinders. But i did call them up today and sort have got my route.. although it isn't entirely what i want but one has to compromise.
Can't do Fiji or Easter island but oh well.. Going to book tomorrow. Once and for all.. |
