Hi all -

Okay before setting off on my RTW trip, I am now setting sights on which bank and banking options will best suit the needs of a international traveler. I figure I would poll your thoughts and suggestions and get advice from experienced travelers who been there and done that.

There are some ideas Here

In sum:
Internet Banking, some local banks, or international banks.

When I did recent my journeys, I paid for as much as I good in advance, then used credit card. I had some cash, and used ATMs if I needed more.

My not so recent journeys, there weren't ATMs and credit cards were not accepted as widely as they are now, so I relied on Traveler's cheques.

Good luck on your trip!

Hi Jason,

For my trip (in 2001) I put all my money in a Citibank account and withdrew cash along the way. I only encountered one ATM during the entire year that refused to accept my card. That was in Chiang Mai - and there was a different bank right down the road that was more than willing to cough up the baht, so it wasn't a big deal.

That said, if I had to do it all over again, I think I'd go with Schwab. They give you more opportunities to actually earn a little interest on that big pile of cash you give them before you set out around the world...
