This is such a great thread...

It has me thinking about sacrifice, choice and opportunity, privilege, lifestyle, and mostly the idea of quality of life.

My partner and I have been together for 11 years and have - despite all logic - managed to unintentionally save for our RTW trip.

I've played a mental connect-the-dot game to see how we arrived here, a mere two weeks away from launching our year on the global road.

The dots are mostly small but sometimes large choices we made about how to move and groove through our separate and combined lives. Then, there are the other dots that offer no choice of where to connect to next, circumstances beyond our control or simple good fortune.

I am going to continue to think about this and will probably turn it into a post on my website, Ephemerratic.com.

When I finish my pondering and writing, I'll come back here and let you all know the results!

Traveling is expensive, no doubt about that. With the oil price going up it will get even worst like it or not. Even a weekend trip can easy end up more than 500$. But the point is to count it as travel, if that is what you want to do. On the other hand 500$ can go an awfull long way when you travel so I think twice before taking a last minute weekend trip. Also think twice about any expense that is not on your priority list. For me travel is important and as such it is right up there as % of spend.
Saving like mad and spending like mad once you start travel is not working for me. I keep spending relatively constant. One thing that saved me a lot of money is carefull planning of my trips. We are not talking two weeks advance purchase here. We are talking 4 - 10 months advance purchase and research. Especially with complex airfares it worked very well.
