I've heard a few references here and there to travelers who carry around their copy of Lord Jim by Joseph Conrad, or the Tao Te Ching.

Apart from actual travel guidebooks. What would you consider to be a quintessential travel book?

I think that The Beach by Alex Garland is definately a GenX travel bible. (much better than the movie)

Any others you can think of?

Right now I'm on a short holiday in San Francisco so I brought along my copy of Jack Kerouac's 'The Dharma Bums'.

Not only is it quintessential of the San Fran beat bohemia but it takes you on Jack's travels and spiritual journey as well. Talk about your "travel bible" wink
