Just thought I'd put my two cents in and say that my favourite travel books of all time are:

Charles Nicholl's The Fruit Palace -- hilarious escapades while in theory writing the 'Great Cocaine Story'

Redmond O'Hanlon's In Trouble Again -- about his journey up the Orinoco to find the Yanomami and ram yoppo up his nostrils at high velocity

Bruce Chatwin: What Am I Doing Here -- great essays and writings, better than some of his travel books (In Patagonia and The Songlines).

Paul Theroux: The Great Railway Bazaar -- flowing, vivid and humorous prose as liquid as the landscapes he passes through. Top memory for dialogue too...

I really got a buzz out of Paul Theroux's 'Happy Isles Of Oceania'.

I recently read a book published by traveller's tales called 'Testosterone Planet'. Its a collection of adventures both exciting and funny by people such as Jon Krakauer, Bill Bryson and Sebastian Junger.
