I recieved a Travelsmith catalog in the mail the other day and it got me thinking. Do you think that catalogs like Travelsmith and Brookstone have any effect on travel? It would seem to me that they only add to the consumerist nature of tourism. It might just be that every time I see a shirt like this that some poor guy dropped $80 on I feel a little unsettled, but is their presence a bad thing?

Just interested in peoples take.

Why is a shirt like that neccessary, or even desireable for travel. And 80 bucks?

That's like...a zillion Philippine pesos.

I have no idea. And yet people buy things like that everyday.

Considering that their target customer is a 55-year-old female, I wouldn't worry just yet.

Unless we want people passing judgement on how to dress when we travel, it should be no concern of ours how other people travel.

And, incidentaly, shirts (like the one mentioned) keep people such as myself employed.

No doubt what people wear is their own personal choice. I guess I'm more concerned about the fact that companies like Travelsmith take advantage of people's ignorance when it comes to traveling, and push products on to them that they don't need. Even National Geographic does it.

But then again, I guess that's what a good business will do, get people to buy things regardless of if they actually need them. More probably though, I might just be a bitch-and-moan kind of guy who thinks about this stuff entirely too much.

I'm hard-pressed to think of any company that doesn't do that.

Well that explains why their catalog arrives in my mailbox even though I've never bought anything from them.

Damn that "target-marketing" thing!!!

Of course no one NEEDS a shirt advertised in Travelsmith or any other catalogue. Travel catalogues can be pretty amusing - think of it as entertainment - all the things people dream up that you might possibly 'need'. How about the cannister with the plastic bag attached that you're supposed to carry around with you in case you end up in a fire? I've often wondered about who buys that one.

Taylor, I love your sig.
I never get tired of seeing it.

It always seems to flow right in with your comment, and it's the ultimate disclaimer if needed!
