I also highly recommend that book.

It was most helpful when, many, many years ago, I drove down to Mazatlan in a 1964 VW bus with two lesbians and a handful of LSD.

(I turned 21 on that trip)

Although I've used Rough Guides before. I prefer Lonely Planet. They seem to be more budget driven and tend to have better information.

I'm a big fan of rough guides for their sheer lack of detail, but overall I prefer to carry a lets go almost everywhere I go simply because of their great coverage of budget options. They also tend to give specific prices for everything. I'm tight so that suits me!

Article about a LP author who plagiarized his work.

for the really goofy places (like Gabon for example) I think Bradt guides are excellent. Often it's the only choice, but they do a good a job, even in the absence of competition.

To other destinations I go with either LP or Footprint books.

LP all the way.

They are the only series that provide decent maps. On complicated maps the grid-reference system is very handy. Rough Guide maps are mediocre, while Footprint and Lets Go are godawful.

Secondly LP is easy to use because it has a full contents page for each chapter. Finding things in other books like RG is a pain in the arse since you are constantly searching back and forth for the right page.

The LP place descriptions are well layed out with clearly labelled headings like 'getting there and away'.

LP travel details for a town/city are located alongside the other information of that place. With RG you have to go to the end of the chapter.

LP gives the actual price of accomodation so you can compare prices properly. Other titles give you a silly code for the price-bracket so that you have to look up what the code means. Also for convenience LP neatly sub-divides accomodation into Budget, mid-range and expensive. In certain other titles they are chucked in together in one list.
