When I set out to write a travel book (a narrative about the travels, not a guide book) about the lovely but isolated Shetland Islands, I had an idea that there were not many such books available. But it was only after I had completed the manuscript that I did a serious search, and found to my surprise/delight/horror that mine would be the first all-new Shetland travel narrative since -- wait for it -- 1869!

Ahemmmm. So either there's a niche there unexploited -- or the niche is so tiny that it's not worth exploiting!

My book, called BETWEEN WEATHERS, Travels in 21st Century Shetland, will be published in May 2008 by Sandstone Press.

In any case, I thoroughly recommend Shetland as a place to travel. It's off the beaten track, it is absolutely steeped in history, covered in archaeology, and full of fascinating geology. The scenery is stunning -- how about 1400-foot cliffs on Europe's most isolated island community, Foula Island, for a start? All that, and the wonderful local folk music is played with enthusiasm all over the islands, and the Shetland welcome to outsiders has to be experienced to be believed.
