I watch a lot of travel shows on TV and occassionally I remember the first travel show I was hooked on - Big Blue Marble. Who else remembers this show that ran from 1974 to 1983?

Each week they featured a few stories about kids around the world and their day-to-day lives. It taught me to accept people from different cultures equally (although I was later deprogrammed of that by my suburban environment).

Especially memorable is the gorgeous theme song. Here is a video of the intro song, which is also damn good for the first 58 seconds until it goes into full-on 70s mode.

This is a page where you can click to listen to an audio-only version of the original theme, which doesn't sound as nice as I remember from my youth.

Evidently many people mailed in to the show and got penpals with other kids from around the world who mailed in, but I was too lazy for that.

That was my favorite show when I was a kid. I even owned the album (but I have no idea what happened to it). I'm certain it laid the seeds for my wanderlust. At the time, it made me want to find pen pals from other countries. I think they had a way of doing that, but I never got around to it.
