Whoo hoo I'm excited to see the Hollywood version of this flick esp Mos Def as Ford Prefect... fabulous!

Here is the quicktime trailor and if you got to the movie homepage they have more~

It doesnt come out til April - I'm excited anyway hehehe

I love what The Guide has to say about Towels, although I would argue that Sarong's are a better choice these days hehe

+++++++++++

Towels

Towels are the most useful thing it is possible to have handy in a crisis. One of the first things that Ford Prefect did for Arthur Dent after the demolition of the Earth was to equip him with a towel.

They can be used for snaring birds whilst falling from a three-mile high marble statue.

They can be used to signal temporally unstable spaceships by fossilizing them in planetary strata.

They can be soaked in nutrients to provide sustenance in awkward situations (Although, as Zaphod Beeblebrox found, this is not a terribly tasty solution to hunger).

They can also do a really good job of drying between your toes.

The Hitchhiker's Guide is full of suggestions for successful towel deployment. It is worth noting that a cup of white vinegar in a wash will help keep your towels fluffy and soft."

HeHe

Yes! I'm psyched for the Hitchiker's movie, and by the looks of the trailer they've done a great job with it, too. Of course this means I'll have to read the books again.

I'm a huge hitchhikers fan but must say, the radio scripts are better than the books and the TV series. Has anyone seen the cast yet?? The choice for voice of the guide is inspired Smile

HI Mina

Thanks for the link to the updated website. I'm not entirely sure I like the look of the film to be honest - such a stickler for the books/radio series. Have to see it in full to find out. Like the cast though

It is an awesome book authored by Douglas Admas. And I always fantasise myself as being Ford Prefect, a galatical journalist. Go see the movie.

Perhaps this clarifies things a little

"This is the story of a book, a book called The Hitch Hiker's Guide to the Galaxy - not an Earth book, never published on Earth, and until the terrible catastrophe occurred, never seen or heard of by any Earthman.

Nevertheless, a wholly remarkable book.

in fact it was probably the most remarkable book ever to come out of the great publishing houses of Ursa Minor - of which no Earthman had ever heard either.

Not only is it a wholly remarkable book, it is also a highly successful one - more popular than the Celestial Home Care Omnibus, better selling than Fifty More Things to do in Zero Gravity, and more controversial than Oolon Colluphid's trilogy of philosophical blockbusters Where God Went Wrong, Some More of God's Greatest Mistakes and Who is this God Person Anyway?

In many of the more relaxed civilizations on the Outer Eastern Rim of the Galaxy, the Hitch Hiker's Guide has already supplanted the great Encyclopedia Galactica as the standard repository of all knowledge and wisdom, for though it has many omissions and contains much that is apocryphal, or at least wildly inaccurate, it scores over the older, more pedestrian work in two important respects.

First, it is slightly cheaper; and secondly it has the words Don't Panic inscribed in large friendly letters on its cover"

Douglas Adams got the idea for the book while being pissed out of his head in a field in Innsbruck while travelling around Europe. While staring at the sky in his inebrieated state, he wondered whether a guide to the galaxy would make a good book. Surely the only trilogy in five parts, it is truly remarkabley good fun.

Dustyshoes - ME TOO! What a job that would be... I love his five year revision to the earth entry "Mostly harmless" hehhe

lol good explanation Elvie, best to let the Guide talk about the Guide

I think my interest was fanned by that of my father, who gave me the books to read when I was quite young; I've found most people my age arent up on them, but I guess that is why they cast Mos Def?? a great choice IMO

Yahoo has some more clips up - kinda odd lol~

I too never heard of these books before, until i saw the early movie trailers and was like what the??, Then one of my friends explained that it was from a bok, and how great they were. Now i'm very tempted to go buy/borrow/read them. But unfortunately im to poor to afford anything. Just like how i want to go see Dennis Miller live at Casino Rama on Friday... but yeah you guessed it, i can't afford the 45$ tickets... Frown And those were the cheapest ones too. Oh well, all in time my friends... you ahve convinced me to go seek out this guide to the Galaxy and educate myself...
Until next time,
DIana

Check out my Travel Blog It's currently out of date, been a little lazy... But i'll get to it soon. (Did I also mention I was a procrastinator????)

You can probably goto a local used bookstore or book trader, or even Amazon.com yourself a cheap used copy for next to nothing.

"Come off it, Mr Dent,", he said, "you can't win you know. You can't lie in front of the bulldozer indefinitely." He tried to make his eyes blaze fiercely but they just wouldn't do it.

Arthur lay in the mud and squelched at him.

"I'm game," he said, "we'll see who rusts first."

This is just brilliant and to me, is exactly what Douglas Adams was all about. His style and train of thought. All five books (in the trilogy Roll Eyes) are littered with this type of writing. The Dirk Gently books and especially the Salmon of Doubt (which sadly never got finished).
Should get to see the film next Wednesday and, after a dubious introduction to it, I'm actually really looking forward to it now. At least the critics didn't tear it apart (which is a rarity nowadays)

I'm going to see it tonight, I hope it doesn't suck like people on Rotten Tomatoes are saying it does. Mina, did you bring your towel to the advance screening?
