I bought the Lonely Planet Britain book and used it a great deal while I was planning my route. Now I wonder if I should take it. It's over 1000 pages and weights a ton! I won't be spending much time in Scotland on my own and I won't be visiting Wales. Is it worth it to pick up the LP England book and take that in it's place?

I tear out the maps. (As a librarian, this might be against your code of ethics, or it might just feel really good.) Then I underline or annotate on the maps the things I want to do.

When I read LP or whatever guide book, I underline stuff that I am interested in. Then I go back over the book and jot some quick notes on one or two pieces of paper that I bring with me on the trip, along with the maps.

If there are some pages that have a lot of info on them, I tear those out and bring them.

The weight of LP sitting on my lap at home while reading seems inconsequential, but somehow that same LP in my bag/pack on the road weighs a ton!

Edited. I just remembered that you are the proud owner of a re-binded, plasticized, Technical Services-updated LP. Apologies to your LP if I hurt its feelings.

No harm done Pep, my LP has a very thick skin. Big Grin

Funny, but I've actually had offers to buy my LP Britain when I'm done with it. This thing is built to travel! It just weights a ton!

Librarians destroy books regularly. We just do it in secret because people freak out...really FREAK out when they hear we rip up books. I was thinking of making photocopies of the important pages and then picking up maps at TIC's on the road.

I just can't imagine dragging that book around. Crazy
