hey,
on one of the trips i got a cd by this american chick annie d'franco. I have the misfortune though of living in a country where the chances of getting some more of her music are about the same as seeing a crossbreed of a cow and a sea cucumber. I checked the internet but all i found was some blogs with her mentioned. Does anyone have an idea where i could get this stuff?.

thanks

I am so very pleased to be answering your question.

Ani sells her own music. Because she is a righteous babe. Keeps the profits with the musicians that way & she has more creative autonomy.

No I hadn't heard her spoken word stuff AMV (Is Jules your name?). Thanks for the link!

If you're looking for other stuff... on the link to Righteous Babe records, I haven't heard the album yet but the new Toshi Reagon (daughter of Bernice Johnson Reagon of Sweet Honey in the Rock fame) I've heard is great. I've done a little graphic design work for Toshi in the past so I've seen her perform around NYC, generally her live presence and performance is so much better than her albums, except for the new album on Righteous Babe records.

Ok, I"m gonna be the odd poster here. I own non of ani's music, but she is one of my heroes. I'm doing that musician thing myself, and it's just amazing what she's done.

So, any recommendations for an Ani virgin?

Yep - Christina, Jules is my name! Smile

Sara Lee is on RBR records and used to tour with Ani - while I haven't heard her album - she was great on stage. If I were buying music, I would shell out some $$ to check that out.

I didn't realize that Andrew Bird was on that label now - that guy is awesome! He does music all over the map and it is always unique in a delicious way - not a way that makes you consider the benefits of gouging out your own ear.

But I love Utah Phillips! Love him! Have you heard his stuff? -- it is of the storytelling variety that kind of reminds me of Arlo Guthrie. And often Ani accompanies with subtle vocals and instrumentation.

To answer your question, Chris D - I would suggest either 'Little Plastic Castle' or 'Dilate'. There are some nice horns on 'To the Teeth,' but LPC is good for many rotations in my cd player before it gets old.

"Dilate" album, 1996 (edgey, angry, and rockin' good times)
"Not a Pretty Girl" album, 1995 (classic Ani styles)
"Little Plastic Castle" album, 1998 (experimental & funky)
"Ani Difranco" album, 1990 (the genesis of Ani)
