So, I"ve been listening to Slayer again, and remembering why heavy metal used to be good. Damn, "Reign in Blood" and "Seasons in the Abyss" make me wet! Great shit. Some silly evil lyrics, but the music is so damn intense. It's like the punk rock of heavy metal.

Any other Slayer/metal fans out there? I must say that I haven't listened to metal in years. I had a 2 year run in with death metal, and metal got a bit silly to me after that. Are there any good heavy bands that don't rely on the silly evil imagry? Maybe a politico-metal band?

Go on, don't be scared to admit your love for metal. Razz

I love metal. Especially doom/death metal, but Slayer are great too, especially live.

Some bands you should check out:
- My Dying Bride
- Arch Enemy
- In Flames (even though they seem to record the same album over and over again)
- Opeth
- Tiamat (better live than on CD imho, their recent CDs sound a bit too "nice" for my ears)
- Ashes You Leave
- Samael (though I don't like their latest album)
- The Gathering (though they move a bit farther away from metal with every album)
- Hollenthon
- Summoning

I'm sure most of these bands have samples on their websites. I know MDB does. I'd be interested in hearing your opinion about them.

Thanks for the responses folks,

Taylor-

Yeah, I think that's part of the reason that metal lost it's flavor with me. Rap and metal are not a tasty combo to my ears.

Xoom-

Yes, it's because the new Slayer is not the Slayer of old! Granted, I haven't listened to one of the newer albums. Maybe it's just me moving on to different music.

Karlien-

I haven't had a chance to check out the bands you listened, but since death/doom metal is your thing, is that what you'd classify these bands as? I guess I like metal the same way I like a lot of the punk stuff...short, sweet, and heavy.

I think if I was going to go for metal, it'd be something slower and heavier instead of blazing fast. And I have no idea if the guttural vocals will settle well with my ears Smile

On a side note, eMusic has heaps of great stuff, but it is subscription based ($10 a month for 40 downloads). Also, for more mainstream poop, check out allofmp3.com It's a semi legal shady Russian site that sels songs for $.02 per meg. You pick your bitrate, format (ogg, mp3, flac, etc) and off you go!

Alright, I'm finished advertising for the day.
