Can someone recommend me a guide book that isn't horribly out of date?

I'm looking for books about South America, Africa, and South East Asia.

Any of the Lonely Planet or Rough Guide series will be fine. It's a matter of personal preference really. Go to your local bookstore and see what they've got.

From what I hear though, Lonely Planet for these continents are a few years out of date, and in such developing nations, that would be a problem.

I'm thumbing through Rough's Guide right now, it seems alright.

What you hear is not entirely true.

Sure, it takes awhile to compile the information, edit it and publish it, but no publisher is better than any other in this regard. They "leapfrog" each other with their titles, ie., one year the Rough Guide may be more recent, one year the Lonely Planet might be more recent, etc.

Look at each and choose which one was printed most recently. Anything having to do with lodging, transportation or restaurants changes so often that no book (or even magazine) can guarantee accuracy.

These are guides, not bibles. The basic information is still accurate.
(and last I checked, the bible was not all that accurate either)

Luckily, there is a nifty travel site where one can get up-to-date info from fellow travelers free of charge.

To find this site, just click here.
