I'm not sure how popular he is in America but I know he's not exactly well known in the U.K.

Anyway Sufjan Stevens is a sort of folk/indie singer songwriter guy(although his music is a lot more diverse than that), who plans to record an album for every state of America. His home state Michigan was his first and he's just released his second Illinois.

The reason I mentioned it is that after heraing both of them I immediately wanted to travel to that particular state. He is incredibly good at evoking the atmosphere of a place.

Does anyone else have records that seem to define a place?

I thought about posting about him as well. I love the Illinois album, and have yet to hear the Michigan album. I'll make it a goal to check it out soon.

I own the Michigan one and love it. It's so different from anything that's out there. I'll have to pick up Illinois. If you read the liner notes where it says who plays what, you will notice that while other musicians play one or two instraments, Sufjan plays about 20. Great stuff.
