I'm going to rant here. I'll warn you in advance.

My favorite book of ALL TIME is Pride and Prejudice. I love the story, the characters, the time and the wit of Jane Austen. She breathed life into her age and gave women a voice they had not had previously. I adore this woman.

Some years back the BBC did a miniseries of Pride and Prejudice with Colin Firth as Darcy and Jennifer Ehle as Elizabeth. The screenplay is one of the best adaptations I've ever seen. Everying was perfect from the cast on down. It was a huge success and even insired another England author to create her own Elizabeth Bennett, Bridget Jones.

Now Hollywood has decided to make another P&P and has cast Kiera Knightly as Lizzy. I've seen the trailer and they her look like a weepy, crying fool! They have dressed her in browns and, according to the director, have deciced that all the Bennett sisters will be country bumpkins!

OH....it's tearing my heart out.

Am I nuts to care this much? Frown

Oops! Ya caught me!

I was just pointing out that "Am I nuts for caring so much?" was, in fact, two questions.

(shuffling off, now all embarrassed)

Naw, you're not crazy for caring that much. It reminds me of the time I saw Mortal Kombat. Pure crap. I was upset that they took an awesome game and turned into something truly awful.

You've got me on something that I rant about, too.
some examples of where Hollywood has got it so wrong:
remake of the Italian Job
remake of the Vanishing
Bonfire of the Vanities (the book is in a different league)
and .... dare I say it, oh sacrilege, the remake of War of the Worlds. Nothing touches HG wells, but the original film at least comes close.
I can think of loads more examples, but I'll keep quiet now

Here's a new one to add to the list. The Omen remake. I can see absolutely nothing good coming out if this.

The origianl was very creepy and damn good. I imagine the new one will be turned into a horrible computer generated gore fest.

Fuck, is a Friday the 13th remake that far off?

Oh man! Don't get me started on Hollywood ruining things.

Asian films.....I have seen far to many Asian films ripped off and converted to 'appeal' to the western audience.

'Ju-on the grudge' was by far the most chilling film I had ever seen, it's music gave the film an atomosphere so tense it was scary just listening. The camera work and frights were subtle and mind-boggling effective and the story was confusing and I liked it that way!

Hollywood got hold of it, stripped away the subtlness replaced the music with typical 'build up' horror music and made the plot so unbelivabley basic it was embarrasing!

They've done the same with The Ring, Dark Water, The Eye in fact I guess they will rip-off all Asian Extreme's films at some point!

Touch 'Battle Royale' and I might just cry

First off, I agree.

This is unconscionable. I am so tired of Hollywood remakes that I want to spit. Libby, the PBS version with Jennifer Ehle was nothing short of perfection.

My mother was complaining about this the other day - why so many? Does Herbie really need to be redone? I have a theory. Very few movies made before the 1980's (nay, the 90's) appear on TV these days. For those of us who only have access to cable (not satellite) - a perusal through the listings will illustrate my point. When I was a kid growing up in the 60's & 70's (cough-cough), there were craploads of old movies on TV. But times have changed & it appears that parents are lugging these movies homes from the video store. Kids' tastes are far more sophisticated now (vis-a-vis technology) and they wouldn't sit through the 1968 version of the Love Bug.

That's my spiel. Did I say though that I hate this plethora of remakes??

Urban,
It's worse than I originally thought! They bumped the time of P&P back about 20 years (I wondered why the costumes seemed off) so it's not even set in the Regency period. They wanted it a bit rougher. Lizzy looks more like a servant (unkept hair, dreary brown shapless dress) because the Director wanted her to not be so alluring.

ARGH!!!

The Bennett Sisters
