A guy named Peter Pinney wrote a number of books about his travels which are well worth reading - if you can find them. He was a cigarette smuggler in the Caribbean, a crocodile hunter in New Guinea among other things.
His first book was about his trip overland from Greece to Burma back in the 50's. He usually had no money, bluffed his way across borders without a visa and his 'baggage' was often the contents of his pockets. Subsequent books related his trips across Africa.

The titles?

'Dust on my Shoes'

'Who wanders Alone'
