Obviously, I have left out the really obvious ones, Bill Bryson and Peter Mayle, etc., and there are plenty of bestsellers that are pure crap ('The Olive Farm' ~ Carol Drinkwater). I have saved you the trouble of vomiting into your lap. All my suggested titles are worthy, says I.

7. 'Travels in a Thin Country' by Sara Wheeler

I was really not fond of this book. I am not a fan of the writer for a few reasons. I think she is straight out a poor writer; secondly, she had experiences that would really not concern the average traveler (at least that’s what I think). When she went down she went down for different reasons other than exploration. I myself would love to go to Chile to live and meet people have experiences. What I gathered from her book is that she went just to write a book. The experiences she had were solely for the book…otherwise I don’t think she would have done even the simplest of these tasks. She also went down with lots of bank, and was introduced to an upper class Chile; that we the average travelers would find hard to befriend.

All in all…I do not recommend wasting your time on this book…I recommend saving the money and buying Chasing Che. Much better….and the same price.

Peace,
Macondo

It is not as though you have to choose between one book or the other. They are printing new ones every day.

You mileage may vary on whether or not she is a good writer, I think that she writes very well.

As far as "she went just to write a book", well that is exactly what professional writers do for a living. Try reading "Innocents Abroad" for example; what do you think Mark Twain was doing? He certainly wasn't on his gap year looking for cheap bootleg CD's and silly pants, he went there to write. That;s their gig, after all.

You're entitled to your opinion, after all, that is why they make both chocolate *and* vanilla ice cream.
