Still looking for Carmen Sandiego

I have been playing the piano since I was little and have always lived somewhere with either an organ, keyboard or piano. I moved out of my parents so no more piano and I was over their house for easter and sat down and realized how quickly i'll forget stuff if I don't mess around on it more often. I play by ear so I can't read notes at all so I really DO need to practice all the time or else i 'll "forget" how to play.

Problem is I don't want to go out and just get a cheap keyboard... i'd like something in the $400+ range with a good key touch and a decent piano sound to it.

It is so difficult because I keep finding new things I want to spent money on and I haven't quite justified this yet but I know it is important.

You are 100 percent justified in this purchase. Your post tells all.

Unless it doesn't. I mean assuming that your obligations are taken care of. This is a great item to treat yourself with.

An instrument is a beautiful thing, and a keyboard isn't just some gadget that you mindless play for four hours a day (read: xbox or ps2). You wouldn't tell and artist to stop painting, so why tell a musician to stop playing?

Yo Joey,

What exactly are you looking for in this keyboard? If it's just a nice piano sound, it shouldn't be too hard to find one in the 2-400 range. Of course, if you add in the cost of external speakers and so on, that could add up quick! Music is a rather expensive hobby.

I say, if you can't live without the music, get a cheapo $100 casio or something to get your chops back up on(and learn basic music theory, it's well worht the time), then decide what you want out of a keyboard.

If it's not obvious yet, I'm not an expert on keyboards. Have you considered a digital piano?

Here's one that's $500 bucks, I say go check out the local music stores, get a feel for several models, read revies, etc.

If music is in your blood, believe me, get on it! My mp3 player brokded shortly after I arrived in Australia, and it's tough. So, in conclusion, get on it ASAP!

And see about getting one that's MIDI capable (99% will be anyhow) then you can hook it up to your pooter and run some software programs that will have you playing like nobodys (man that word just looks wrong) business in no time.

Lemme know how it goes

if you can afford it, go for it. Smile

sorry about changing the subject but.. chris, do you think MIDI is on its way out?

quote:
Well, it was a protocol that was invented in 1983-your mouse communicates faster with your computer than MIDI does-and it's so inaccurate. It's embarrassing that we use it, to me, in music. It can be so sloppy sounding. My friends can make tracks in MIDI-I mean, I can't tell you how many people I've sat down and shown like, "Hey look, you program a beat and lets listen to it, ok?" And I'll let them program a beat and then listen to it and I go, "Okay, let's go convert it into audio and I'm going to time correct it." And then they listen to it and they're like, "Oh god, I'm destroyed for life-I'll never be able to use MIDI again."

I mean the difference in sound is so astonishing that if you have it demonstrated to you, you just can't listen to MIDI anymore because it's so sloppy, and it's disproportionately sloppy. There's a misnomer of MIDI latency like maybe it's late. It's not late, dude. If you track sixteenth notes at 120 BPMs coming out of a brand-fucking-spanking-new synth, say the Trinity, with the Uniter Aid, hooked up to a fast Mac, and track those and look at them, you'll fucking die! You'll have one that's twenty samples late and the next one will be 300 samples early and the one after that will be 150 samples late. Now imagine exponentially multiplying that by however many tracks you've got in the song and it's just a pile of slop. It's just a joke! And the way that you hear the difference if you have, say, the time correction demonstrated for you, you hear it and go, "Oh my fucking god." It's not like some cheesey computer programmer saying (in a rather stereotypical computer programmer voice), "Uhh, you need to do this to your kickdrums to make your tracks sound cool." I mean, if you listen to it, it's like, "Holy shit this sounds better." So that's why I hate MIDI... (Brian Transeau)

I cannot play a thing , but I was attracted to a Harmonium after watching a Neil Young DVD the other day. I found some really nice ones on ebay from as little as £20 ($40).

Heya Xoom,

MIDI is waaaay out of my league. The onliest thing I've ever used it for was to hook a keyboard up to my computer for music theory lessons (ever heard of music theory :P)

But I"m a bit confused...what is he comparing MIDI to? Modern computer programs compared to the ancient MIDI system? Man, that article made my brain hurt!

are there any guitar centers there? i'm not sure about florida, but everytime i go into a best buy (we have three around here) no one knows anything about the four or five keyboards they have there. on the other hand, everyone that works at a guitar center here seems to know what they're talking about when it comes to their products and just music theory (chris!) in general.

chris, i'm not sure what he was comparing it to, but you can check out his website at www.btmusic.com - it's from the first interview on the list.

I don't really need to go to a place where they sell keyboards in order to learn more about them... I can do my research online and really i'm more into just playing with it on my own and seeing what it does... that is why I like best buy... I can just go in and check out the cheap ones they got first and then if they don't satisfy me i'll go to an actually music store.

A local public school might have pianos that you can play for free on. Check around. Maybe you can do that till you really understand how vital it is for you to buy that keyboard.

And if it's impt to YOU, get it!

Ahh, I have a co-worker who said she has a keyboard in storage right now since she is living with her family for a little while. She said she would let me borrow it for a little while just so I can get my fix and maybe that will help me out until I can save up the money for one.

See, I have money I just don't want to dip into my travel fund for it and it will be another 4-5 months before I can put the money aside from my other budget. This should be nice though!

It probably isn't the best keyboard but it will due for now.

Going to go pick it up tonight.
