WORLD MUSIC

what do you think of that? if lots of folks are interested, we could pair off and make cds for one another.

if you are willing to make and send a world music cd, say it here.

I WOULD LOVE A WORLD CD......BUT I DONT HAVE ANY WORLD MUSIC MYSELF TO SEND YOU----IF YOU HAVE SOME OF YOUR FAVORITES ON A CD I WOULD LOVE TO RECIEVE IT.......MAYBE EVEN FOR A SMALL FEE

I ALWAYS LOVE NEW MUSIC BUT I HAVE A HARD TIME FINDING NEW GROUPS....WE HAVE ONE INDEPENDENT RADIO STATION WHERE I LIVE. SO THAT IS WHERE I FIND ANY AND ALL NEW MUSIC. THEN I HAVE A HARD FINDING THE CD....SO MOST OF THE TIME I WAIT AND ORDER IT..........WELL IF YOU ARE WILLING TO SEND ME A CD LET ME KNOW..

NOt so difficult to coordinate if you - Zopa - acts like the centralizing point. People email you with the postal address, you email back your postal addreess. All parties trust that the other party will post their cd, so whenever cd's are ready, they will be posted.

Got one question: how do you define World Music? While I understand world music is not simply international music, could we assume that for the purposes of this trade in question here, whatever is international music could be accepted?

For example, I have some excelente brazilian contemporary pop, stuff that mixes traditional brazilian music with bits of rock and eletronic. While you wouldn't find it classified in your record store's world music section, i find it pretty cool and interesting to be showcased.

What do you think?

How about we start a list...can I start...or do we want this to be a surprise..like discovering each others world music taste...

Okay so am in too...but before a blank CD i have to load the program for doing this ..for somebody in the silicon valley am clueless to all this technology...what ever happened to recorded "tapes" and Franklin planners...

later....

Is this legal? Just don't want Zopa to land in jail for a brilliant idea and us for following it.

I think it's a great idea, but Madhu has a good point that there are legal issues involved.

Here's my understanding of the current U.S. interpretations of the music copyright laws. Anyone providing music to someone else that does not already own that same music can get nailed for breaking the law. It doesn't matter if you charge for it or not. This is for the sender only; they can't really touch the recipient. It also depends on what country you are in. Those of you in Canada, Belgium, and elsewhere may be ok. It depends on your country's laws.

If we want to be safe about it, we could instead post the songs/artists that we like right here on the board. It would mean we'd have to chase down the music ourselves, but we'd still get exposed to some cool new stuff, which I'm always up for.

I still think it's a great idea though.

You're more likely to get prosecuted by posting music on the message boards then you are by sending cd's via postal service. Ask anyone whose sent a mix tape to someone else, versus someone who tries to run an mp3 blogging site. RIAA is very very pissed at online music because it allows anyone to download the music. Five or six people trading music is nothing compared to two hundred in a day that Google can dish out. I think you have nothing to worry about.

Oh no, I didn't mean we should post the songs here on the board. I meant post a listing of the song titles or artists you like. I also seriously doubt anyone would actually get in trouble for mailing mix CDs anyway, but the question was posed.

Two artists that I like are Baka Beyond and Era. I also like Mehdi.

Oooo, well then...track listings are a good idea. That'd help out people like me who don't have enough world music to make a cd to trade Smile
