I recently bought a D300 plus new lense. Cost equals around $2700. I will be traveling in the Subcontinent again this summer and am very chicken about taking it with me on my backpacking trip. So, I will probably travel with my older D70S, even though the pics won't be as good.

Do any of you use expensive gear while 'roughing it'?

Im not going on my solo trip yet (im 16 - going in 2 years) and my 6 years around the world with my parents i didnt have my own camera, but my gear (right now) is worth about $4800 (Australian) and will be at least $7000 by the time i leave (2 years time). I'm going to try to cover most of this with insurance, or i might consider not taking my laptop ($3700) or maybe bring a smaller, cheaper one...

I took my brand new D200 to Antarctica and braved salt water, munus 6 deg celcius temps and other things. Take your D300...get insurance and enjoy the new toy. Its just a camera :-)

I definitely agree with Madhu...why buy a great camera like the D300 if you're not going to take it with you places you could really use it. Get insurance and enjoy the camera. If it's stolen, it's stolen. And if it's not, then you'll have some great shots. I got a D300 recently and it takes such great shots I couldn't imagine going back to my D80. By the way, my D80 and 18-200VR lens was stolen in NYC, but I got money back from insurance and it allowed me to take the plunge and upgrade to the D300.

I agree too, however I always take a point and shoot as well for going out at night or when i really don't want to be noticed w/ a big camera. It's great for getting excellent shots w/out the bulkiness and attention of an SLR. That way you'll have 2 options.

If your serious about tryng to make a living posting images online is NOT the way to go. Images online are for family and friends, (especially Flicker)

I have BFA from the art institue in SF, Have worked professional out of Asia and have taught. Now i enjoy photogrpahy,

Had one instructor who told us if u realy love photography NEVER try and make money out of it but get a job at the Post office that pays well .

I agree 100%

IN the end if ur serious u wont make much if anything by posting ur images online. U will need a stock house ot carry your images.

These two sites allow u to post ur images and will arrange sales but......
