I'm on the market for a digital SLR. I have a film SLR, a nikon, don't remember what model, but now would love to go digital. What are your favorites? I want to keep it under a grand for sure. Thanks for the help!

I have also recently changed from film to a digital SLR. I have a Nikon D80 which has been brilliant. Battery lasts ages, roughly 1000 shots. I had a Nikon film SLR so this was the obvious choice as the lanses from that fit the digital which helps to keep costs down.

It's also worth investing in and learning to use photoshop as it gives you so much more room for error particularly if shooting in RAW format.

I have a theory that there are two kinds of people in this world: Nikon people, and Canon people.

I'm a Canon person, so I recommend buying the best Canon dSLR you can afford. This one is a great deal for the price, but this one is even better. After those models, you start to get over $1,000.

Conversely, if you're a Nikon person, follow the same with advice with respect to their cameras (they're both great brands, and you can't really go wrong with either).

I recently purchased the Canon Digital Rebel Xt (not the Xti). The Xt is 8megapixels (the xti is 10 mp). I have done a lot of research and I think this is a decent camera for the price and it is small/light - great for travel. I'm definitely not second guessing my decision...

I recently changed over last year from my old Canon film SLR to a Canon 30D.

Promptly took it overseas to Morocco and could not be happier. I received all sorts of advice to just get a small digital point and shoot camera. Which after consideration I ignored since, as one friend who knows me well said, 'you love your SLR, you will regret it if you do not have it with you when you travel.' He was right.

On a note of lens jv, I do not suppose since you are a fellow Canon person you have tried the new 70 -300 DO IS USM lens? I've been eyeing it off to replace my current 70-300 zoom... well actually I was just looking at the IS version of the lens then they brought out the new one.

What lens or lenses do you have for your Nikon film SLR? One way to lower costs is not buy redundancy. A Nikon D80 would likely work with your older lens.

Canon, Nikon .... they are just tools. They aren't the only tools for the job either. There's Hasselblad people and Leica people and Pentax people and....................

No, I have not. I'm relatively new to the SLR world, and am in the market for a telephoto zoom myself. The DO looks like a great option if you're concerned about size. I've seen decent reviews. But that price ... ouch.

I personally am leaning toward the 70-200mm f/4L USM. Looks like an excellent option, especially at under US$600. I also considered the IS version of the 70-300, but it's very hard to resist the lure of L glass for the same price. Yeah, you lose 100mm, but it seems you gain considerably in terms of image quality.

hm, thanks jv always good to get other opinions. Your thoughts mirror mine. I like the idea of the DO but it is the price that is holding me back.

I really like the IS function. Having used it with a work camera it is amazing the difference it makes. I was very sceptical when I first saw they brought the IS lens and wondering why they bothered.

The last time I checked the price of the DO they did suggest the L series lens, they probably saw me wince at the price of the DO! The only thing that is holding me back from the L series lens is that it does not have IS... oh the choices....
