What's the consensus here on getting insurance to cover all your expensive gear? I'm thinking of bringing a small digital camera and an SLR (plus lenses and accessories) on my year-long RTW, and was thinking that I'd be out quite a lot of money if I were to part with them.
Has anyone else bought insurance for this type of thing? Does most travel insurance cover this, or did you have to buy additional coverage? Any good recommendations or other tips I should know about insuring my stuff?

Thanks.

Most renters/home insurance will cover your belongings, even if they are stolen on the road. Look into that. Regardless, keep an eye on your gear!

At the same time, get travel insurance anyway for emergency health reasons. BnA sells a good and cheap one, underwriten by Lloyds of London.

Yeah, I already looked into that... my policy only covers my stuff when it's been away from home for 180 days or less. My trip will be for about a year. Add to that the fact that I won't even have a 'home' while I'm away... My girlfriend and I will be moving out of the apartment we're renting now. We will probably be storing our possessions at my girlfriend's parents' place while we're away. I wonder if an insurance company would cover our possessions that we take on our trip, even though we won't actually live her parents?

What valuables will you be taking with you that you would want to insure...maybe you should consider not bringing them if it is gonna stress you out the whoel trip?

Of course, sometimes we must bring them valuables. I bring my laptop when I travel (unfortunately I do cuz it is so heavy) - but I bring it. The best insurance I have for it, is myself.

Don't leave it anywhere unattended. Don't flash it around so to speak. If I leave it in my room , lock the room and lock it in a pacsafe to a object in the room. Most theivery happens at an opportune moment for the theif.

Have you found a policy that covers your personal stuff yet?

I agree that preventing theft/loss/damage in the first place is the best idea... but it would be nice to know that if all else fails, I have something to fall back on. Most of the insurance policies I've found online cover only up to a certain amount, like $1,000, which wouldn't cover the full value of my equipment. I'm also annoyed that all the medical insurance policies I've seen seem to cover trips only up to a year in length. What do you do if you want to travel longer?

For photo equipment, Check out the North American Nature Photographers Assn:
http://www.nanpa.org/insurance.html
Not real cheap, but specifically covers camera equipment and associated computer equipment anywhere in the world.

Thanks for the tip. Unfortunately, despite the insurance being for the NORTH American Nature Photographer's Association, the insurance plan only covers American residents. I'll keep looking.
