I really only want to carry one lens for my trip to SA, I have a Nikon D40, but I am leaving my 18-55 behind and want to venture out with one of these two lenses. Prices are about the same (within $50 of each other). I am not a professional, but I appreciate and like to take good photos. I love "people" shots and am not a huge fan of the extreme zoom. Any recommendations/opinions would be much apprecited. Thank you.

Nishant,

I also have a D40 and am trying to make the exact same decision.

If you can afford it (very expensive) I think the 18-200 is the best choice, but they all have VR which makes the price out of my range.

Otherwise, with the 70-300, I am afraid that it will be necessary to carry 2 lenses.

Have you found any more information?

thanks,
Greg

I use 18-200 VR lens and I think for traveling purpose it worked great for me. Its not perfect but for the range it offers it pretty good.

If you are gonig for people shots above landscape then i think the 55 - 200 will give better results over all. I am taking both my 28 -55 and 80-200 over to SA with me to cover all, even though nature is my main area of interest I feel ill need the smaller lens for shots of the people and school iam working with.

I ve only just started using my 80-200 which is great for distance but I wouldn't portrait with it so cant see the use of bigger for what you want.

18 - 200, works like a charm. The only trouble is delivery. Nikon is far behind and it takes months to get one. I ordered mine on December 22nd and received it March 30th. It's worth it though
