These are the 2 cameras im looking at:

Cannon Powershot A85
and
Sony Cyber Shot DSC-W1

i know nothing about cameras. i chose them because i liked what they looked like, had the movie sound feature and big LCD screens.simple as that.

Id just like to know if either of these are slow in taking photos. im very impatient and dont want to have to wait. my last camera sony DSC-P52 had everything that i needed except that it was slow.

i'd like to hear from anyone that has had any problems with them

cheers!

my canon a70 just e18-ed. maybe its just my luck but this problem is pretty notorious across the internet. i'm not sure if the newer canon models have this problem but i'm already discouraged.

try searching canon+e18 on google to get more information.

I like Canons and haven't had any problems. Then again, this is the first I've heard of the e-18 error. I have the A75 and it's takena serious beating. Before that, I had another PowerShot and it never failed me.

I don't like Sony's that much, but it's just because I like the Canon interface so much better.

I photograph for a living. I live real good. Those things being said, the obvious question is what enables one to do it for a living and do well at it. The answer is very easy. Talent and equipment.
I have 5% talent and 95% equipment.
And I use Canon.
Seriously though, from my perspective, when we reached the digital age, Nikon, the leader in 35mm cameras tried to rest on their laurels. Canon on the other hand got off their ass and stopped being 2nd best. They went to work, and as a result now, each year, they continue to come out with superior, cutting edge, digital cameras and accessories.

Anyone in the digital business swears by Canon, though you may still encounter some Nikon types that think otherwise, but they are dreaming I think.
A good camera to start with is their mid-level EOS 20D. A very good 8.2 Megapixel beauty with numerous high end features. Can be found on EBay for around 1500.00 in pacjkage configurations with lenses etc.
Good luck and good shooting.

I've been using the Canon Powershot A85 for my trip so far and had no problems with it. Only just starting to experiment more with the manual settings. But I love the panoramic feature it has. Here's some pics I've taken so far... (I hope this works...)

Powershot A95, awesome camera. I've owned Canon's before and they seem to never fail. Amazing image quality, stores video with sound, small and compact, easy to use and relatively cheap for such a great camera. It's going for 389 right now.

I realize this thread was started about six months ago, but for any future lurkers ...

I personally recommend avoiding the Sony DSC-W1. I chose it over the Canon mainly because of the smaller size and larger LCD. I actually love the camera – when it works! My problem has been repeated malfunctions and horrible warranty service from Sony. I had to send it for repairs twice (for two separate problems) with eight months of buying it.

The first problem was with some sort of internal corrosion, which started approximately 3 weeks after I got the camera. It caused black, blurry smudges to appear in pictures taken in bright light. Unfortunately, this problem started while I was in the Middle East – a very sunny place. Half of my pictures were marred. When I got back, I sent the camera in for warranty repairs and was told that the cost wouldn’t be covered. Apparently it was “my fault” (apparently I had exposed the camera to too much moisture; this while I was traveling in one of the world’s driest regions, but whatever.) Repair cost: About $800. I said no thanks.

I continued using the camera and a few months later it totally conked out. When I turned the power on, the lens wouldn’t telescope out and it wouldn’t take pictures at all. This time, they did fix it on the warranty.

So there’s my two cents. I probably just got a lemon (I’m sure most Sony cameras are not defective), but what really bugged me was the indifference I got from Sony. How much does it cost them, really, to replace the defective camera of a customer who has had a very bad experience? Very little compared to the potential lost customers. The whole episode was surprising to me.

I’m wondering, lozza - did you ever decide which camera to buy?

my personal experience is that the Canon digitals are the 'fastest' when it comes to shutter response, and they do take the best pictures overall, in my opinion. So go with the "A" series Canon - you won't be disappointed. Smile

Your photos are very good.
The real "secret" to it all is simply finding a piece of equipment that allows you to capture exactly what you see with both your eyes and your soul.

It's a bit off-topic, but...

I am one of those Nikon-users, and I'm sorry to say I have to agree with this in many regards. I shot Nikon film cameras for years and (still!) swear by them. When I switched to digital I stayed with Nikon for several reasons (including not having to buy lenses), but mainly because I was so happy with what I had.

Now that I'm digital, there are many things I don't love about my Nikon, and when it comes time to trade up, I will most likey seriously consider others (but I still keep my Nikons for when I shoot old fashioned....)

Good Luck.

Steve
