I have a question about a digi cam. I was thinking of buying a Kodak Easy Share 3.3mp(2x Optical Zoom / 3x Digital zoom). I don't want anything to expensive, but I hope to have pictures of reasonable quality. I like to have them in print so I can handle them.

1.) Is this an OK camera for a beginner? I want to take pictures of enough quality that they are presentable.
2.) As far as the easyshare dock is concerned, will that work with CPU's in Central America?
3.) If this is not a good choice then what would you recommend?

TIA for any response!

Which model of the EasyShare? I see more than one listed with the 3.3mp?

For "reasonable" quality (I put "reasonable" in quotes because that is subjective), you can probably get by with a 2.0. If money isn't an issue, sure, go ahead and go for the 3.0 or higher.

The question about the dock isn't so much about it working abroad. Computers are computers anyway, and they're all made with parts in Asia. Sure the EasyShare will work. The real question is finding an internet café that will allow you to use it. Some will, some may be anal about it. Ask first.

That camera is great for a beginner. Is it a model that is capable of taking standard AAs, or is it rechargable proprietary battery only? I've found in my travels that battery life is extremely important; you don't want to run out.

One digital camera that I've been recommending to travelers is the new Sony Cybershot DSC-U60, which should be in retail stores mid July (real soon). Check it out here:

SONY CYBERSHOT DSC-U60

It's only about 3" tall, runs on AAAs in addition to their recharable pack, has an easy 1-hand operation, and is waterproof up to 5 ft, for those spontaneous snorkel trips.

Choosing a camera is really subjective, especially when choosing one to travel with. Your type of trip may also determine your camera.

Some things to think about...

The model is the CX4300. Ease of charging and downloading the photos is a big deal to me. I had a Digi on my last trip to Europe and found that the majority of cafes I went in I wasn't able to unload my photos. Long story short is that camera was stolen and I ended up losing about 80% of my pics because I hadn't found a place to transfer them.

I guess what I ment by resonable photo quality is that I want a bad photo to be due to my inablility as a photographer and not because I had a bad camera Smile

Finally, I looked on Ebay and the CX4300 is around $159. Think it was $229 at Best Buy & Wal Mart. Not a bad deal.

If you're planning to travel with it, consider an Olympus. They have something called "USB auto connect" where all you have to do is plug your USB cord into the computer, hook it up to the camera and then it will download your photos. With other types of digital cameras you usually have to download the software onto the computer first, so it may be more difficult with cybercafes and places like that!

The Olympus Digital Stylus is an amazing little camera - you can get it wet and not worry about it. I saw a demonstration where a guy poured a pitcher of water over it and it still took photos. I borrowed one from work for the weekend... I liked it. Smile
