Hey guys, hope everyone is happy today! So i've just got a Flickr account and i like it! Although i've pretty much reached my upload limit already. Has anyone here got a pro account? Is it worth money? I want to upload something in the region of a few hundred photos, some now and some over the course of the next year or so, so if any other suggestions for photo sharing accounts i'd be happy to hear them. Cheers for any help in advance, peace and love, Danny J

Flickr is wonderful. I have a Pro account and I definitely think it's worth the US$24.95.

For the price flickr is fantastic, and if you're going to want to upload more than the limit of the free account well worth having.

The only concern I have about flickr, and its a small one as not really looked into it, is it seems to edit the original photo uploaded, and at the very least strip out the exif info. I guess it's converting the full sized version to a slightly more compressed image to reduce space used but could be wrong.

There are a few more around like mugmug but flickr would seem to be the way to go.

The one think I don't like about Flickr is that I can't scroll through photos in a row without going to the slide show. And if I go to the slide show, I can't see captions. They have the little reel on the side, but it doesn't go from one pic to another.

I could be doing something wrong, but I have tried.

Other than that, it is a great service and 25$/year is worth it!

I really like Flickr too and for me I have started to learn a little bit more about Photography and want to become a serious amateur.

I kinda got into the whole Flickr community as well and some of them helped me buy my next camera, answer questions and also offer some good critque if you can take it.

Even as a place to upload pics to share $25 you cannot beat that...

I printed only 1 pic so far from their site (8x10) and it turned out pretty good. I would be concerned if I saw that this compression they are doing would hurt the print quality. Must ask...

Happy flickring....

I agree with what has already been said in that a Pro account is worth the money for sure.

Looks like I need to correct myself.

Original images are avaliable to pro account holders, not those with a free account.

I should have read the faq more closely...

quote:
Can I access my original images?

We do resize your photos to more web-friendly dimensions. Each image has a 75x75 pixel thumbnail, a 120 px, a 240 px, a 500 px and a 1024 px version (that's the length of the longest side), as well as your original file.

When you are viewing an individual photo's page, you will see a link under the photo title labelled 'All Sizes' that links to a page where you can view each of these sizes, and download them if you wish.

If you have a free account, no-one (including you) can access your original file. If you choose to upgrade to Pro they will become available...

What about Snapfish? They have unlimited storage as long as you order something once a year.

I used Snapfish a lot in the past. It was cheap and convenient to send in a roll of 35mm film, have your photos printed and then published in your online photo album. But once I started using a digital camera, I stopped using Snapfish. The few times I tried uploading digital images to my Snapfish photo albums, it took forever. Flickr is a lot easier to use IMO.

I use Snapfish as a secondary backup. My primary backup is an external hard drive, but I worry about something happening to that, so now I upload all my photos to snapfish.

Since I just use it as a method of backup, I don't care that I can't view it in the original size. I'm just happy knowing that if worse comes to worse, that I can pay for CDs with the full-size images.

Now I'm taking back some of the nice things I said about Flickr...

Internet access here is 10 bucks an hour and upload speed is unprintable. So why does it take an eternity just to sign in to Flickr? Why is there still a separate page to sign in for Yahoo users vs Flickr users? And why does the default reset to 'private' (almost all my pics are Creative Commons License). Mad

I so much want to write my blog, but uploading photos keeps me too busy. I know, if I'd taken a laptop, I wouldn't have to type everything up from my diary... Roll Eyes

That only seems to happen when the uploading is stopped before completion. I've had it happen to me a few times at internet cafes on the road, but never when I'm at home.

What really bugs me is that most internet cafe computers don't have a program for resizing images. If you could resize photos easily, you could upload them quickly to Flickr and then replace them with the original size when you get home...

Try picturetray for resizing in internet cafes.

It doesn't need installing, so just download and run. The only downside its it doesn't keep exif in the photos but if you replace them later on then you get round that.
