Hi,

I'm buying a nice digital camera right away. Although I'm going to get a pretty large memory card, I plan on unloading them every once in a while by posting them on a website.

two questions:
1) What site do people recommend for this? I've seen some before (when friends have travelled), but I'm curious as to what might be the cheapest(or free), best organized, and easy to use.

2) how do most people upload their pictures to the computers in europe? I don't have the camera yet but I'm guessing the transfer cable will be USB or firewire. Is this the norm in europe and how most people do it?

Thanks, any other suggestions/advice on pictures/europe would be appreciated as well.

Brent

Hi!

I (and everyone I know *g*) do upload pictures with an USB cable -> almost every weekend (jap, I love taking pictures)

And I normally store them for my friends at:
1.Pixum
2.Photobucket (both are free and easy to use)
or a private website.

thanks! I checked out a ton and Flickr definitely seems awesome. I think where it will excel is the organizing features, and being able to add tags and details to pictures and search them later.

thanks again!

I have a question as far as uploading pictures...

If i'm doing it from internet cafes and things like that in europe, how does it work for uploading. at all three of the photo hosting places i've looked at (including flickr), they all have their own uploading program which you have to download and install.

Is this normal? Is it allowed at these cafes? I just want to make sure that I can actually use it after I pay.

On that note, it seems like its a wise idea to spend alittle bit of money and get a paid version at any of these sites, as I'll have tons of pictures etc... yea?

please check it again, I have a a free flickr account and didn't have to download anything. You can upload pics from your PC or from a disk.

you can store 1 giga in Yahoo, and you can also store 1 giga in Gmail, why not getting a couple of those free accounts plus a flickr?
just my 2 cents

As I wrote in my travel blog post about flickr it is pretty good, I have a few quibbles, but it is my leading candidate at the moment for photo hosting.

A friend suggested SmugMug which will also hosts the small video clips cameras take.

If you can, burn all pictures to CDs as well. I wouldn't trust a 3rd party website as a true backup for my memories.

As far as burning pictures to cds, is this possible at most internet cafes/hostels in western europe? Or is this something you recommend once I'm back home?

THanks

I would think that WIFI access is getting popular in Europe? I prefer using my own laptop on the net. I have access to all my data, photos and apps etc.

Even in s small country like the Dominican Republic, WIFI is catching on. DR WIFI hotspots

I would think it would be even easier to find WIFI access in European countries?

Yahoo.com, under their my.yahoo section has changed their rules and will let you store ALL of your pix there, if you take the time to start a FREE personal home page for your browser.

I said ALL, but maybe they have a limit, but as if this time I have almost 6GIGS of my pix up there, and it still lets me upload. Of course, I also have them on CD too, but its easy to get to them and do what I need when they are right there in my browser. Give it a try.

One issue with yahoo -

It's great for sending pics to people, but it's also blocked in some countries, such as China. Yahoo is also mainly for storing snapshots that you don't care about losing the sizing of your photos. Even 720x480 photos become reduced.

DeviantArt is also free but it takes much longer to upload each photo. DA is convenient because you can also sell prints - and postcards - without having to have somebody run orders for you while you travel.

<a href=http://www.deviantart.com/print/226285/>Here is an example of the prints page</a> and <a href=http://www.deviantart.com/view/24484977/>the regular file-sharing page.</a>

Just a quick question about this… if I set up one of these free accounts, do you know is it possible for me to have someone “at home” to burn the photo’s onto discs for me as I wont be able to do this as I go along. Like if Im sending them on a link to view my photos, can they log in and burn these onto a disc or would this cost them extra to do?

it should be possible - but depending on the service, could be easy, or could be a pain in the butt. Most will let you "right click" and "save picture as..." - but doing that for lots of photos will get very old very fast. Which service do you use or plan to use? And BTW, love your signature line! duly noted.

webshots.com has both a free and a pay version. The limits on the free version are not bad and the price to upgrade is also within reason. I up graded so I could put more photos into one folder. It is very easy to use although you do need their software, but since that is a free download it pretty much does not matter what computer you are using. If you are not also keeping copies on a disc then consider doing your uploads for a size that you can later use for printing large prints rather than the faster upload for desktop size files.

Personally I keep tiff files for printing on cd's and upload the size that can be used for desktop backgrounds and screensavers which allows for the free use of my photos, but also will cause anyone wanting to use my work commercially to contact me for the larger tiff files which they pay for.

Pre-digital for many years a lot of my stuff now online will require some color adjusting to make them what they once were as the negatives begin to deteriorate after 10 to 15 years. I believe I finally got them all scanned to a digital format. If you are going to put things on cd's anyway, you can burn them onto disc and then mail them home to yourself. I found that a good way to not have to lug around ever picture I took for the whole trip.

Irealized after my initial reply to your post I may not have been as clear as I should have been. If you ever have intentions to print out or use pictures you take commercially you really need the bigger file sizes (such as tiff files) as they print much much better than gif or jpg

If you are only going for online use then it is not as big a deal. One thing to consider is taking along a usb card reader, plug it into any computer with a burner, burn the pics onto a disc, mail the disc home. I usually have a laptop along with a burner for just such occassions, but know that sometimes that is just not pracical. There are enough cyber cafes worldwide now that usually you can plug in your card reader, burn or upload and go again. (if you only upload then you need to specify a larger file type if you want later to use your photos for any printing.)
