I have been searching for a digital slr for some time now. I have narrowed it to either the Canon digi rebel 300d (6.3mp) or the xt ( 8mp ). The reason I have picked Canon is because I already have lenses that will fit the digi. My question is, for the difference the the 2 mentioned above ( $300 ) is there a big enough difference in the megapixel levels to justify the purchase of the more expensive camera. I'm far from a professional photographer and the largest I can imagine printing pictures is 8x10. I'm really interest in everyones input with either of these cameras or any helpful info that you can offer.

ZAD, I have the 6.3 megapixel Digital Rebel. If you're only looking to print up to 8x10, this camera will suffice. It's an excellent camera (I haven't played with the xt, so it's hard to compare...). The Digi Rebel takes excellent quality photos. But only a $300 difference? Hmmmm...
If you want more info about the digital rebel, just ask. I've had mine for about a year, and love it! |

After rechecking the best prices, it seems they are only $200 apart. Probably only bells and whistles that I would never use. Ok, so anyone have anything bad to say about either of these models?

ZAD, For even up to 11"x13" enlargements, you will not notice the difference between a 6.3 and 8.0 MP camera, especially considering that the resulting "loss of sharpness" is really only important for the most demanding professional photographers.
As far as having anything bad to say, I must say that Canon probably has the best digital platform especially for the prosumer level digital SLRs. I would say just go for it!! "I may be lost, but I'm making good time!" |

Nothing bad to say at all about my digi rebel. I'm no professional photographer. But I've been able to take some excellent shots with mine! I photograph jewelry for my work, which is just about the most difficult subject to photograph...the pics come out great! (After taking multiple shots on different settings)

You've probably already purchased your camera, but...
I'm shooting with a 6.3MP Nikon D100 and have blown up pictures to 12x18. At that size you begin to see real digitization in certain textures and brightness. You also start to see greater digital noise, especially in low light shots (a function of digital cameras in general, compared to film). But really, how often will you blow up pictures that big? The biggest benefit I see to the 8MP (or higher) is the ability to crop smaller sections and still blow them up to 8x10 or 8x12 and retain a nice sharp image. Good Luck! |

Thanks for the advice, and you're right, I have already bought the camera. I decided on the Canon Rebel XT 8.0 mp. So far I really love this camera, I'm glad I decided to step up and get the bigger mp cam. Now if I could just figure out how to use all the functions on the camera I might actually get some good pics out of it.
