I am going to Eastern Europe/Balkans for 12 weeks and planning on staying in hostels and not drinking much, just eating from supermarkets, market stalls and cheap restaurants sometimes etc. I will be passing through Western Europe for 2 weeks Couchsurfing on my way and staying with friends (Amsterdam, Brugge, Bern, Ticino - also cheaply).

Should £5000-£5,500 be enough for the whole trip?

Any advice would be great!

Does this include your flight? I would think that would be plenty, and you could even afford to splurge a bit here and there. By my calculations, 5500L over 84 days is about 65L/day. I bet you'll have money left over.

I'd say £5,000 is plenty enough
depending on eastern europe and you mean anything east of berlin, prague, and slovenia

have a look on hostelworld.com and check out accomodation prices and get yourself a lonely planet you can't go far wrong.

I was in estonia and lativa last year and it was cheap, not drinking you could easily get by on £30 a day,
bosnia for example a guest house room is 10 euro's a night
i was in slovenia last summer and lake bled and ljubljana are both very cheap, in bled a good meal (3 course) with a few large beers came to 12 euro's a head. ljubljana was even cheaper

dubrovnik will be more expensive as is montenegro but to be honest with your budget you'll be able to get buy anywhere I guess. many Americans on this werbsite get by on much less (50% less)
