I plan on being in Basque country for four or five days this month. I'm thinking of making Bilbao my base (San Sebastian seems more expensive), and spending less time there but using Euskotren to get to smaller towns and other cities.

I want to visit San Sebastian one day, and from there go up to Hondarribia and/or Hendaye-Plage, and return that night.

I'd also like to head over to Bermeo or another small Basque town like that.

How do Euskotren tickets / passes work? How much do they cost? Are there any "bonos" available?

San Sebastian and Hondarribia are much nicer. I think you should rather base yourself in one of those cities. Bilbao is too much industrial, despite the famous Gugenheim museum (which is mostly interesting from outside).

I think it's a good choice to make San Sebastián your base. I was born in Bilbao, and I have to accept it's more beautiful S.Sebastian. But don't be affraid of Bilbao, it's not the grey and dirty industrial city of 20 years ago any more. Nowadays it changes practically every month. It's getting almost nice. If you would have enough time I could recommend you some beautiful landscapes near Bilbao.
I prefer Lekeitio than Bermeo. You can't miss S.Juan de Gaztelugatxe ! It's a church on top of a rock over the sea accessible by a straight staired pass.
I love also Butrón castle, Urdaibai natural reserve, Balmaseda, Orduña...

I definitely prefer San Sebastian to Bilbao. San Sebastian is a blast and has some of the best food in the world. It is a beautiful city and the ocean there is awesome! If you can, check out Biarritz. It is a hidden gem. Basque land is beautiful- get up in the mountains if you can

I have to agree with the last post, San Sebastian is amazing and I think you'd be remiss by not making it your HQ. The beaches, landscape, and nightlife distinguish it from any other location in that region and, DON'T WORRY, you're not deprived of any culture by the city's relatively (by Basque standards)large size.

Do try to get to Viehla in the Val D'Aran in the Pyranees if you can...one of my favorite places I went. So unbelievably beautiful!
