We're thinking about traveling from Genova over to the South of France. Is there much to see in this stretch? I'm sure the coast is a beautiful drive, but what should we stop and spend time doing? Where we would be a nice place to spend the night?
Thanks |

Monaco?
When I was in Nice I just kind of hung out, went to the Cannes film festival, and went to the Monte Carlo Grand Prix 'practice' day. Cannes had a nice beach but it was awfully crowded. 'course, that was probably due to the film festival. But there's a couple other towns in the area that I believe have quieter beaches. ____________________________________________________ The painting was a gift, Todd. I'm taking it with me. -J. Grey |

There are a dozens of nice little towns on that coast. Most of them are straddled by not-so-pretty towns, however, and aren't as accessible by train. Menton, just across the border, is a nice little "city". Honestly, though, most of the great sea-side towns are south of Genoa and north of Spezia.

On that stretch, I've only been to Sanremo. It's a pretty little town, but I don't know if there's anything particularly special about it that would set it apart from any number of other little towns along the coast.

If you go a little north and stay inland, there are many beautiful small towns to see. It is much more rural and cheaper than the coastal cities.
There are hotels and campground scattered throughout the area. |

There are several places along this coastal route that I find interesting. For a nicely picturesque coastal community try Noli, perhaps the nicest spot along the entire Ligurian Riviera di Ponente. It's smallish though. Of the larger towns, I really rate San Remo, with its faded charm and great old town (called La Pigna). Another reply above suggests going inland, and I'd second that. if you turn inland at Albenga and return down to the coast at San Remo, you miss little along the coast. I particularly like Triora (and the road from there down through Taggia back to the coast is superb).
