Hello fellow travelers,

Do you have any favorite bookstores in Europe
(preferably with books in English?)

My friend and I have recently started writing a blog called the Bookstore Guide.
http://bookstoreguide.blogspot.com/

Anyway, if you plan to travel somewhere or if you've been
there somewhere or if you are from somewhere in Europe, and
know any good bookstores for recommendation,
would you be kind enough to do so?

Cheers!

When I am in Zagreb, I often stop by Algoritam Bookstore near the entrance to Hotel Dubrovnik on Gajeva street. They have a good selection of English language books and magazines. One can find everything from new releases, classic fiction and other popular works of fiction, to history, science, language, art, regional studies, etc. There travel section isn't bad. Algoritam has some publication in Croatian and periodicals in several languages. If I recall correctly they have a decent music section and offer some video games.

There is also a newish bookstore on Ban Jelic Trg in Zagreb. It has mostly local language books, but it does offer a smattering of English language books. I found their cookbook section particularly helpful. Sorry, I don't remember the name of the store.

In Sarajevo, I like to stop by BuyBook not just for their great selection of regional fiction or Balkan area studies, or the the odd classic or modern fiction book, but they also the back of the shop includes a nice little cafe. The whole place has a great not-quite spic-n-span independent feel. When I lived in Bosnia, I would often arrange business meetings in the ir cafe.

I was surprised that you don't mention the British Book Shop in Vienna in your blog. It has a wide range of English language books and a very good childrens section. It is located on Weihburggasse. There is also a Shakespeare & Co located on Sterngasse in Vienna. It is a tight fitting dusty shop with an eclectic mix of books, but well worth browsing. And for travel literature in Vienna, one cannot beat Freytag & Berndt on Kohlmarkt strasse. Wow, what a selection of travel stuff. My wife had trouble getting me out of the store.

Here in Cairo there are a couple bookstores that supply me with most of my page turning tomes. Diwan, located on 26th of July street in Zamalek is excellent for modern fiction, regional works, some art, childrens books and music. Their little self serve cafe isn't bad. Egyptian designed notecards, notebooks and such are also available.

The American University of Cairo bookstore near Tahrir Square has a wider selection of books especially in non-fiction subjects and a decent travel section. The AUC bookstore, however, is expensive.

For the most current periodicals in Cairo, I shop at the street kiosks.

Hope these recommendations help and good luck with your project.

Wow. Thank you so much! I'll see what I can use from it all.
I need to search some technical things about those bookstores
online and it all depends on how much info i get.
You have no idea how helpful you've been. I wish more people
would spare just a little bit of their time.

And we already do have buybook from Sarajevo on our blog..
We've been there as well Smile
Actually, the whole idea of the blog was conceived in Sarajevo.

Only one thing though, I'm going to link back to your site
in the recommendations. I hope that's alright!

And once again, thank you!
