Both Nice and Biarritz are nice locations. I prefer Biarritz personally. It is beautiful! Biarritz has some of the biggest waves in Europe and there are spectacular mountains all around. Plus you are close to San Sebastian- one of my favorite cities. Nice must be great in the summer time. I was there for Carnival. There is great nightlife in Nice. Definitely check out Blue Whales for after hours. And tell them Mr Heineken sent you!

I've only really explored Nice in the French Riviera (the capital of the area)- been there twice and thoroughly enjoyed it.

Love the Promenade des Anglais along the water, the flower market every morning, wandering the narrow streets of the Old Town, a gelato from Fenocchio and stunning sunsets every night. You can also make an easy day trip to Monaco.

One thing to note... the beach in Nice is all rocks, so if you're looking for sand, you'll have to head to a different city like maybe Antibes, Cannes or St. Raphaël.

The whole French Riviera is beautiful- I can't imagine you'd go wrong wherever you choose. Just be aware that if you go in the summer, it will be very crowded. Have fun-

I have 4 days the first week in August to spend in France before I go to a time share in the French Alps. I'm trying to decide where to go. The South of France, I'm sure would be great, but not the crowds. Is there anywhere in the South of France to escape the summer crowds? Or should I just plan on going somewhere else?

Thanks for the recommendations - they both seem fantasitc. Despite the rocky beach - can you still lay out on it - or just take a train to Monacco, antibes, or cannes?

Tekkingdd - it seems like south of france is all pretty busy in the summer - but maybe the lesser known places like Antibes - may be a tad quieter?
