I'm heading to Amsterdam next week for a few days to visit a friend. He just moved there and it's my first trip so we're both pretty much virgins. Would love to get some recs from people on don't miss sights.

The only thing I have on my list is the Anne Frank house. Other than that, I'm open.

Neither of us smoke or drink so not looking for party places. I'd love a great romantic restaurant recommendation. Or a good club for live music and dancing. A great place to get a coffee and pastry while we talk and people watch. Off the beaten path stuff. I'd be fine having the AF house be the only "tourist" sight that I see. I anticipate many future trips to the city so I can take care of the other sights later.

Thanks for any suggestions.

I spent a considerable part of day at the Van Gough museum. One reason why I went to Amsterdam the first time.

I really really liked the canal ride in Kinderdyike (spelling). Each side of the canal were lined with Windmills. I really liked that. It was one of the best sight seeing things I did this past time in Holland. I don;t remember if that was close to Amsterdam or not. We had only time for ride up the canal but walk around as well to go see the windmills up close.

From my first trip I remember walking around the flower market or just the market in Amsterdam. It was very colorful.

How long will you be here for? 29-30 April is Queen's Day, the biggest national holiday. It is, in a word, insanity. The entire country becomes a party for 2 days. It really can't even be explained. Wear orange. Too bad you don't drink...

Unfortunately, this is just a quickie. I fly back on the 27th. I'm not worried about the no drinking thing. I've never had a problem having fun without alcohol.
