So....the good thing about traveling is tasting the food in other cultures....
Of course France is exceptional. And England's bad reputation is far from the truth nowadays. In the Netherlands they don't seem to support local dishes at their restaurants. In Italy you get too much of everything and I could go on :-)

I did look for restaurants in The Netherlands where they serve a typical Dutch dish: stamppot.
Here are a two I checked out:

Moeders
Rozengracht 251, Amsterdam

Haesje Claes
spuistraat 275, Amsterdam

They both were great though a bit pricey.

yep!

As a vegetarian I find it really hard to eat local in most places. Salads rule pretty much everywhere but i stay away from the "local staples". I don't like Romanian food b/c it's very fattening and not for someone who's watching their figure...[coming from a Romanian, I know it's harsh]

Hungarians are known for the delish cuisine but I stayed away from the popular dishes...they are fattening and hot...

I suppose I fall into the "travel for food" catagory, where food and local tastes are major attactions for travel. There are only a few items I've found were not to be repeated and have have been lucky in never having gotten sick from food/water etc unless I was already carrying a virus out to get me.
Now I live in Russia and actually miss not being able to find good Russian cooking in every neightborhood. Here in St Petersburg, which had an international beginning itself, finding ANYTHING except Russian cuisine is easy. Sure there are some expensive restaurants catering the "Imperial" Russia theme and a few moderate restaurants with Russian items on the menu they are hard to find between the hundreds of Sushi bars, English Pubs, Italian, French bistros, Turkish, Georgian, Indian, Chinese, Greek, etc cuisine restaurants. That is happening everywhere in the world in larger cities so getting traditional dishes often requires going to villages or befriending a grandmother who takes you home for a real home cooked meal.

From my experience there are no "fattening" foods. There are fattening portions and fattening lifestyles however. Coming originally from the US is takes some getting used normal sized portions as served elsewhere in the world instead of SuperSize everything in the US. Humans can tolerate almost any foods in moderation, even types that would kill a dog. But humans don't do well with excess.
