Going to Switzerland for the 1st time this April. Starting off in Zurich then working my way down to Geneva. I was just wondering what the "Must not miss" places or things to do are over there. Thanks in advance.

It is called the "Jungfrau". Definitevely all the Interlaken region is worth visiting. If you like extrem sports it is the place to be on summer.

I highly recommend Interlaken. The people there are really chill and it's abosultely beautiful. Definitely try out some of the sports they have to offer....I did a water canyoning trip and loved it. The hiking is also good.

I absoultely loved Basel. I would definately make a trip there. Also, I thought if you are interested in spas at all... make a trip to the Thermal Baths at Vals. The spa was designed by Peter Zumpthor (an amazing swiss architect). The building is gorgeous, the spa itself is amazing... there are so many different pools, beyond the usual, and its located way up in the mountains. The drive itself is almost worth the trip.

Hang out one night in Bern to mix with the locals, then run down to Kandersteg (anywhere in the Berner Oberland is beautiful), but step outside of the more touristy stomps and see some countryside...... Oeschinensee is a suspended glacier-lake in Kandersteg and an easy hike from the train station..... Drink a Cardinal for me!

When I was in Munich, all I heard from other travelers was how much fun they had in Interlaken.

Check it out.

So I will be in the country for 4 weeks.

Any must sees (touristy and off beat tracks). I will be staying with a freind in Zurich but elsewhere I will be on my own.

So I land in June.Any festivals or special things taking place that month?

Also anyother side trips to Austria or Germany that you guys would recommend.

One trip I'd make would be to spend a day in Innsbruck, then a day in Salzburg and then up to Munich for a couple days and then back to Zurich.

Besides "Stoo's Magic Cookie Chamber"?

I'll have to think about this a bit...please give me until the weekend. You are more of an outdoors kind of person, right?

Here is what I like.

1. Outdoors (hiking, camping...but will not have tents with me but can borrow from freind)
2. Photo ops - (Nature, Architecture and people)
3. Foodie ( :-) )
4. People watching.
5. Love off the beaten track ( staying at typical farm...would love that)

I would love to touch Austria if possible. I will make a trip to Nuremburg ( the famous trials from WW II ) also have a old SF freind there.

THANKS! Muchos gracias.

Stoo: we have to plan a Zurich meet up.

So is this http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jayo_dhVypc your basic canyoning trip?

Cause that looks damn hard to beat... I find myself in Switzerland for 5 days during my Europe trip this summer, and even thinking about skipping Ireland to do more. Doing something like that video just about tops my list of must do's. Restless could you provide any other info? What company, how long the tour was, what time of year, etc?

Para-gliding looked OK too, but having gone sky diving I dunno how well it would compare.

Personally I plan on doing Interlaken, Grindlewald, and if I skip Ireland get down to Matterhorn.

Fluffhead, that video is awesome! I'm trying to look for some information on Canyoning too. Looks like so much fun. I'll be in Lucerne for 2 nights in May, and hope to make a trip back to Interlaken later in the summer to do some adventure sports. I can't wait!

I've been skydiving twice, and thought about doing Paragliding, but eh... I don't know. Seems too much like the parachute ride after you skydive. Hang Gliding, now that would be a little different...

Yea Pause I've been tossing around ideas too. I looked up both paraglide and hang glide... looks like Para is a longer ride, but like you said... why not just sky dive? (Which I've done too... but in the Alps it would be pretty amazing on a clear day) and hang gliding looks fun, but the ride looked really short (about 5 minutes).

If you just google Canyoning Interlaken you'll find several links... The best one is about $175 er so, 3 hours of fun and 3 hours (total round trip) on a bus, so it takes a whole day. Make sure you double check the dates, it's only open certain months. I'll be doing it in May so I'm expecting reeeeeally cold water... shucks.

Yeah I'm looking forward to canyoning the most. I really only found out about this sport as of a few weeks ago after doing some research on adventure sports.

Yeah, the water is definitely going to be freezing, but I expect it to be cold no matter what month you go. I'm hoping to go later in the summer like July/Aug. We'll see though!

It's been quite awhile since I was there but here's my thought. I loved the town of Chur. It had beautiful views of the mountains. I was running around the country pretty fast at that point so I only stayed over night since I had blown all my time down by Lake Geneva. I really regretted I couldn't stay there longer.

I love Switzerland. I lived in Geneve for 14 months a few years ago.

I also suggest Interlaken, particularly if you like outdoor stuff. When I was there I went canyoning and highly recommend it. I also did the hang gliding. It was much longer than 5 minutes. You ride the thermals for a while then glide across the hills to the landing zone in the center of town. I've also been sky diving and they're definitely different but both very fun.

I'd also recommend visiting Zermatt for a couple days. It's just so beautiful and you can go hiking on the Matterhorn! Plus, they serve Caramel Vodka there so you know it has to be great! Smile

When you're in Geneve I'd suggest going up the Saleve (in France). You can either hike or take the tram and the view is great over the whole city and lake. When you're going from Zurich to Geneve take the southern train route, I think it's much prettier - along the lake.

You might consider doing a few days of hiking from town to town, perhaps part of the Alpine Pass Route. You'll see a non-touristy side of the country which is great and you don't have to carry anything more than a day pack with a change of clothes which makes it easy.

If you're into WW2 history and going past Munich anyway, I'd suggest making a trip to Dachau.
