I'm doing a month long trek through eastern Europe, and am trying to figure out my Croatia itinerary.

Not sure if I should go ahead and book in advance (I am traveling with 2, maybe 3 other people so was thinking of booking some 2-bedroom apartments, since it is cheaper than hostels).

Is this the kind of thing I need to do now, or just show up and hope for the best?

I still don't know exactly how much time to spend at various locations (Split, Hvar, Dubrovnik, anywhere else that is cool). Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!!!

SO excited! Also, if I'm moving onto Bosnia/Montengro afterward, where is the best place to finish?

assuming your going in june / july / aug /sept

I'd definately book a few nights in dubrovnik and possibly the other places unless you want to stay out of town in an overpriced dump

many places are 3 nights minimum so have a look at hostelbookers or hostelworld to get some ideas

there will always be some places which have spare rooms and mostly the "privately owned" apartments.

if you want to stay in a hotel/hostel, you will have to book ahead especially if you arrive right smack in the middle of the travel season (June to Aug).

In April last year, my boyfriend and I had no trouble finding a place to stay when we showed up in various cities in Croatia (Dubrovnik, Korcula, Split, Plitvice Lakes.) There were people waiting at the bus/train stations to offer private rooms to us- in Dubrovnik it was completely overwhelming. Not sure how apartments work...

I've heard great things about Montenegro- wish we could've fit it into our itinerary. We enjoyed Bosnia very much- particularly Sarajevo and Mostar- beautiful!

Not sure when you are heading to the Croatian coast, but in July and August it gets crowded. We were there a few years ago, and had troubled finding a room in Dubrovnik and Split.

We loved Split and Dubronik, as well as Trogir, Pag and Rab. We also enjoyed Miljet and Korcula. We also saw lots of Croatians outside of the ferry terminals with signs for rooms for rent, so that seems like a real possibility.

If you go inland, Plitvice lakes are not to be missed. And we liked Zagreb as well, although rooms were expensive.

Enjoy your trip! I'm jealous.

If you're venturing off the beaten path I'd say wing it! We did and had no trouble finding good accomodation in June/July. That freed us up to head in any direction we wanted at our own pace, rather than having to worry about being in whatever town at whatever day to meet our reservation. If you're trying to stay in the ceters of Dubrovnik and Split though, that changes things. You'd be lucky to get a good place to stay by just showing up and taking your chances.

Awesome' Thanks for all the suggestions! I'm thinking of booking one night in Split, and then 3 nights in Dubrovnik and then leaving the rest a little open...in Budapest right now, trying to organize transportation!!
