I've read a few posts and a few guide books that allude to Naples not being the safest place but, since I'm thinking of stopping there for a night, is it relative in safety to Toronto? I can accept certain risks, ie, paying close attention to my bags and pockets but is that the worst? I'm smart enough not to walk around any dark streets in strange cities...
Also, is there a hostel that someone might have stayed at where they felt comfortable? |

I didn't feel unsafe in Naples except when I arrived at like 10pm at the train station the first night. Then again I think I was just buying into the hype. During the day it's fine and if you go out at night just go in a group. Two guys did try to jack me on the train south of naples, but they found out who they were messing with, apologized, and I let them go.
6 Small Rooms was an awesome hostel. Only thing bad I can say is that it's four floors up. I've also stayed at the HI youth hostel in Naples. It's really big and institutional but if 6 small rooms is full I don't remember too many other options. |

Naples does look bad, especially around the train station, but I didn't have any problems or hear about any in the few days I was there. I stayed at the Pensione Mancini near the train station and it was fine. The owner was really nice. I asked him how safe it was to walk around at night (or during the day) and he basically said to watch out for pickpockets and to use common sense, but beyond that there was little to worry about. I really liked Naples, it was one of the places I went on my trip where I didn't know what to expect and I was pleasantly surprised.

Im in Naples right now and its a crazy crazy city. That said, as has been already mentioned, if you use common sense and dont wander round at night it seems ok. Theres plenty of people around, just the trainstation to be wary of. I wouldnt avoid it because of its rep - its worth seeing the chaos that is Naples. And yes 6SmallRooms is cool.

I LOVE Naples. My friend and I, two early 20s females, had no problems whatsoever in Naples. Then again, I am comfortable in cities, often even the bad parts. Regardless, if you give off the vibe of confidence, pay attention to your surroundings, and like everyone else said, use your normal city sense, you will be perfectly fine.
By the way, we stayed at Hostel of the Sun. We loved the hostel, and we went out until the wee hours of the morning near the hostel, and had zero problems. Have fun!! I'm jealous. |

Naples reminded me of NYC more than anywhere else--I loved it, the energy. Petty theft is super common so wear money belt and keep a very tight grip on your bag. It's enjoyable and I highly recommend it. And oh, the pizza, divine!

Watch out for the Taxi drivers in Naples. They really like to take advantage of you!

Lost in Place |
6 small rooms is THE place but if its full you will probably end up at Giovanni's place and if you are a chick he will give you a ride on the back of his motorbike...if you're a bloke then you get nothing...maybe some of his free pasta...
naples is crazy and ace so go there cause its alot better than Toronto. |

Hi, I was THERE last year I think. It was.... uffff the most caotic place I've ever been, but WAS safe. I think it's like everywhere you go, it depens on part of the city you stay (you shouldn't go but you go).
anyway I was in Naples one week in one B&B very nice (next to the Ortobotanico) I booked this bed & breakfast in www.venere.com. Very nice and confortable. anyway.. ciao Have a nice trip EDUARD |
