Does anyone know of any hotels (cheap please) near the rail station in verona? I've been searching several online sites and only found a few listings, but I'm sure there have to be more that that. verona is a relatively larger city right? I'm hoping to just hop off the train, check in somewhere (hotel, hostel, guesthouse, whatever) and wander around for a day. Thanks for your help!

We just revamped our hostel section to include maps, so you can look at all the hostels in Verona and plot them on a map of the city. Just click on the red box/arrow at the top of the page that says "Click to Extend Map" and you get a great map of Verona and the hostels (and cheap hotels) in our system.
Alternately, you can look into the hotels in Verona as well, although this page doesn't have the cool map feature.
I stayed at a affordable hotel right by the train station. Franciscos Guest Houst was the name I think. Its a short walk from the train station and a short walk to the opera house. The rooms were very tiny-in fact I could not sit up in my bed. But the price and location were right. Verona is a lovely town, enjoy!
BTW I have a bad traveler story about Verona. Its a long story to type, perhaps I will post later. If not I will tell it to any backpacker when we cross paths traveling

OK, you can't just say you have a bad traveler story and NOT post it now. Looking forward to hearing it! I'll probably try to check out the Franciscos guest house. Sounds fun. I'll also look for the HI hostel (thanks anniebanannie)

I'll have a free afternoon in Verona in a few weeks. I've seen the Arena, the bridge, had many glasses of wine around the town and, yes, of course, shared an intimate moment with Giulietta under her balcony as a safeguard for my future love life.
I won't have the time to see an opera on the day that I will be there, as much as I might like to. Any other suggestions of things to see/do/eat?

There's a cool garden on the opposite side of the river from the arena (can't remember the name of it) - we spent an hour or so there before dinner & the opera, and after racing each other through the hedge-maze (it's not even knee-height, so it's not much of a challenge) we actually napped on an upper lawn for a half-hour or so. It was lovely.
