A get place to chill for a couple of days on the way to Goreme -- I wish I'd gotten to post Goreme! Nearby you can find not only Mary'nin evi (The Virgin Mary's house), but also Isa Bey Camii (The Mr. Jesus Mosque).

Sophia, Bulgaria.

The capital of Bulgaria, Sophia is steeped in history, and several religions (Orthodox, Jewish and Muslim) have managed to find a way to live more or less in peace side by side. Sophia has many wonderful architectural creations, beautiful churches, synagogues and mosques. Also some lovely parks, and strange statues.

Allende is the name of the metro stop in Mexico City closest to where I shacked up with my girlfriend last week. It's near the Zocalo in the center, full of great shops and people watching, and generally big fun.

This atoll saw some nasty fighting in WWII, then got blown up repeatedly until the mid 50s in nuclear tests. Apparently it's opened up, but not on my list of places to see any time soon.

Dover, England. When we took the ferry from Calais to Dover, I went up on deck so I could sing "The White Cliffs of Dover" without anyone hearing me. Smile

No matter where you're from, you won't be the most out-of-town visitor this city has ever had.

Luxembourg ville, adorable little capital of adorable little Luxembourg - among the world's smallest countries - a founding member of the European Union, winner of the famous (or infamous, perhaps?) Eurovision Song Contest several years, and ruled by an Archduke.

PS - And Haci, if you're quick, you get to post Goreme.

Guantanamo Bay, Cuba

About the only way Americans can go to Cuba without traveling via a third country and risking a major fine (assuming they're working and not imprisoned). It's also an interesting Cold War relic -- how many places in the world does a country have a military base in an enemy state?

PS, thanks for the chance to post Goreme, but it was done too recently!

Nexø, Denmark

Cosy little village on the island of Bornholm - with Dueodde beach where the sand is white and fine and used in hour-glasses.

(Remember now, it's ø, not "o")

Alameda, California.

About 15 miles from downtown San Francisco, Alameda is a partially natural, partially man-made island. It is also where both my parents are from. There was a large Italian population (a lot of the grandparents are still there), and during WWII, many were forced off the main island off to a smaller island, giving up their homes.

Attu Island, Alaska

The last island in the Aluetian chain -- it's so far west they had to bend the International Date Line to accomodate it.
