I have a 3 week vacation coming up in May and somewhat torn on which of my bags to take.

I have an Eagle Creek Meridian 55L pack and a JanSport SuperBreak duffel. I normally use the pack for trips of this length (my vacations are normally 3 weeks) and the duffel for long weekend trips, etc.

In the past I've moved around a bit, so the pack has been the best decision. This time I'll be staying in one place (and one hostel for that matter) with only one possible side trip. In addition, I'll be traveling in the fall where I'm headed and will need some warmer/wet gear. Since the duffel holds more, I thought this might be the better choice.

Considering it is airport to hostel (and back) does this sound like a reasonable solution? I'd prefer to bring the duffel and be able to carry a bit more than normal.

I realize I'm going totally against the "travel light" philosophy that I normally embrace, but this trip is a little different so I'd like to be prepared.

If anyone has any thoughts/ideas on the best way to go, I would appreciate it. Thanks.

You could probably get away with the duffel for this one - although it might be kind of annoying to lug it through the airport. As long as it isn't too awkward to carry, you should be good!

Both sound fine, but if you're not movinb around and are going to a city location, why not upgrade to a large rolling suitcase. Its not like you'll be carrying your duffel as un-checked baggage. An idea, no more. Also, there is the idea of one of those lighter wheeled carts with the duffel tied to it, giving you the best of both worlds.

I like light, but I have travelled heavy.

Both serve their purposes, though the older I get, the lighter I travel.

I love my backpacks but every once and a while I go for vacation in mexico and sit on a resort for a week or two. I take my roller suitcase for those trips. I got that suit case for christmas though. i wouldnt go out and spend money on one just for that. You sound like you already know what you want to do. Take the duffel bag. use the carts at the airport

Actually I do have a small rolling suitcase that matches my duffel. (In my defense, they were a gift. My mother thought if she gave me "real" luggage I'd give up on a RTW.)

I think the duffel it is. If I need the suitcase, I'd be OK with that too. It is really small (carry on size) and I don't think 2 small pieces for 3 weeks in a huge city would be overdoing it.

Thanks guys!
