It really depends on what you're planning to do on your trip. I always go with boots since I try to fit in hiking in my travels. I'm clumsy and need the ankle support, too. I have a good pair of Lowa's that have hiked up a mountain and then some.

I wear Vasque Clarions. Without going into details about them that you can find on-line, I can tell you that they're just so perfect for traveling and hiking that I've just ordered my second pair, after wearing down the tread on my first pair to nearly nothing! They're sturdy and comfortable, they give you great ankle support on the trail and they're lightweight and flexible for hopping on/off trains and site seeing in towns. Coupled with a good pair of smartwool socks, you're set for summer or winter!
