So im taking my 13" g5 mac laptop and a DSLR with me all over South America. Im going to be staying primarily in hostels and wwoof-ing. Does anybody recommend any gadgets to protect my gear in the scenario that there is no locker?
Are there any skins that will make my mac look like any old laptop (mac's are a hot commodity down there)? Any ideas or suggestions are welcome |

A sturdy, waterproof Pelican Case is durable, lockable, and would be great for storing your SLR camera and lenses. With the James Bond aesthetic, it certainly looks worth stealing, however.

I don't think making it look old will cut the mustard. Any laptop would be valuable.

Due to the underwhelming response i have decided not to bring my laptop. Just kidding. But unless there is some great idea i prob wont take it. It will be a constant worry and headache the whole time. Even though photography is a huge passion of mine, i will try to find a good website to upload images and just carry a hard drive.

My perspective is that the data is what's valuable the laptop is replaceable. I don't know if you can get travel insurance for laptops, or not, but that might help with your fears.
For my trip, I'm taking my macbook pro, camcorder and an external hard drive. I'm going to try and keep them with me at all times, but I can handle them getting stolen (financially, it would piss me off, but not be a tragedy). |

I got tired of schlepping the laptop around and just invested in a Digital Foci photo storage device. Wasnt cheap, but I had a $150 Amazon gift certificate just sitting there - and they carry products from Adorama. It has a pretty large screen and reads about 5 different memory cards - no need for a computer interface. There are cheaper devices without a screen.
the only problem is I like to backup to a portable WD harddrive too, and cant do that with this device. |

There are, or at least were, a variety of devices that would copy a flash card to a hard drive, where the hard drive was a separate device. So these would work with whatever USB hard drive you had. this is a better choice because then you can buy the hard drive that fits your need rather than spending more for an all in one device. Here's an example of one such device: http://www.thecus.com/products_over.php?cid=10&pid=7 |

Thank you, but that thing has no screen to view the pictures. The Digital Foci has a 4" screen.... You can check the quality before reformatting the card - or in the case of a pro who may need to show pix to clients or give presentations, the thing connects to a TV.
There were a lot of cheaper options if I didnt want an LCD.... |
