Does anyone on BNA have any experience with Berghaus travel packs (rucsacs)? These look great, (the Silhouette looks like what I am looking for). Of course these aren't aren't available in the states :-(
Has anyone else noticed how much better a selection you have in the UK vs the states (at least that I have found in the DC area). I mean Eagle Creek is OK, but come on...don't you guys carry anything else? |

Berhaus stuff is fine.
Travel packs just don't seem to sell well in the USA. Perhaps it is because "Americans don't travel". Eagle Creek has been having a very rough time of it since 9/11, and other companies that marketed travel packs have stopped doing so. Be advised though, that our pals overseas pay dearly for their gear. Quality travelpacks here are a bargain. Even more so in Canada. But the Brits get overcharged for their gear (and their cars, motorcycles and just about everything else). I assume that you are checking out Hudson Trail Outfitters and REI, but yeah: there ain't too much to choose from here. Don't forget Campmor. |

Yup, I've checked both REI and Hudson Trail...Also a number of online retailers including campmor (but those don't help me touch..)
We may not get much variety here, but we don't pay 17% VAT either... |

How about a travel pack from MEC?

Thanks Joe! They do have a few other options - still wish they were closer (it is a fair haul from Washington, DC). I may try to run to Ottawa to check them out when I visit friends in Syracuse (depending on weather and time).
Any experience with their travel packs? |

Extra Pages in Passport |
I recently purchased the MEC Walkabout, but I haven't taken it on a trip yet.
One person on my travel agent's website took the MEC Sojourn to Europe and reports that it worked quite well. Most people I know (including myself) have other types of backpacks from MEC (ummmm...you may be approached by Canadians overseas who assume you're one of us if your sporting a MEC logo) and they give very good performance and are very durable (my daypack - that I use for school - is 5 years old and almost as good as new). They're also very reasonably priced, being as they come from a "pinko co-op." |

Well, I ended up picking up a Walkabout myself (it is ok if I get approached by Canadians :-).
I definitely liked it better than the Eagle Creek/Jansports I have been able to find in my home town area. The overall design and construction seem to be superior and it is half the price. Drawbacks are a little more weight and maybe it is a little too big...I hope I don't end up carrying too much stuff... - Dave |
